Interesting facts on bees. Amazing! I knew that bees die once they sting, but I didn't know that they had this incredible synchronized defense mechanism to fend off any potential harm-doers.

How did bees develop this strategy? In other words, did they just "evolve" into knowing how to work together perfectly?

How did humans develop the mexican wave? In other words, did they just "evolve" into knowing how to stand up and down so perfectly?

Bees' have been making honey since time began (for them). That's why women like for me to 'lick' the honey off of them! Ahemm!

    • No, I taught them!

That's right, bees are pretty amazing creatures, until you realize that I taught them to do that with little tiny pollen biscuits. I can get them to say, "I love you" too!

By Han_Duet 1149132791 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • I would agree...

However, apparently Americans are taught in school that the bees just "happened" to figure this out. Miracle of evolution? I think not.

    • Actually, no

Maybe the default isn't "God". However, should the default be "random chance"? If so, go back to the question, "HOW did the bees radomly develop this?"

    • evolutionary changes are usually minuscu...

spontaneous "mutations" (errors) that are sometimes beneficial, if a change gives an advantage, it persists: "natural selection through survival of the fittest" When a species becomes isolated from its "parent" community, the changes seem to occur more rapidly. When you hear that a cetain bacterium has become "resistant" to an antibiotic, THAT is EVOLUTION! Not every bacterium is ever killed by a drug; those that survive are more likely to produce "offspring" that are also more likely to survive, generation after generation, a new "strain" forms. Remember the changes from protozoa to humans took 3.5 billion years (or so)

    • and thank YOU!

l knew l was taking a chance, also, who knows how l will be "shot down" now?! lol Although l probably should have added that the entire process of evolution is equally fabulous (if not more so) and wondrous as any OTHER explanation of our existence.

    • I hesitate to say it,

but am I the only one to think that humans are kind of going against Darwin. Think about it, if only the fittest (mentally or physically, take your pick) are supposed to survive then why do we keep getting dumber and weaker? (Not everyone, of course, but as an entire species.) There are some people who just shouldn't be allowed to breed. Heh heh. NOW let's wait for the firestorm!!!

    • You don't seem to understand

"evolution." Don't have time to fully explain, but it's a very simple concept, undesirable traits are weeded out through breeding - natural selection.

By Printerman 1149282064 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Answer;

That's the wonderful mystery of natural selection, survival of the fittest and all that.

Google the 'Heike crap' for an interesting parallel - only this time with artificial selection over a few centuries, as opposed to natural selection over millions of years.

  • For those who declare this as a miracle ...

For every threat display in nature that works,
there are countless others that fail.
( e.g. when a mantis spreads its wings and claws, it looks big, but it gets eaten by the chameleon anyways...)

Given that much of an insect's behaviour is hard-coded into its genes, there is a high probability among insects for a random mutation to produce a new and bizarre behaviour in the organism that need not have any purpose.
( e.g. a certain wasp only hunts flying insect prey, then proceeds to bite off their wings ... )
Of course, if that new behaviour is totally detrimental to the organism's survival, it won't get passed on to the next generation.
( Also, in certain insects, haplodiploidy( where one sex has cells with 2 nuclei each, and the other has cells with only 1 ), causes any defective gene to be expressed immediately in the haploid ( 1 nucleus/cell ) individual, so that this individual has a near-zero chance of survival and of passing on the defective gene. In this way, genes encoding self-destructive behaviour are eliminated right after they arise. Only useful/ harmless traits ( e.g. the threat display ) can spread throughout the population.
Bees are haplo-diploid. The males are haploid, unfortunately for them :P )

Only those behaviours that seem purposeful/ meaningful grab our attention, and here become the subject of David Attenborough's documentary.

  • Not evolution

bees are a hive mind and the natural instinct is to protect the hive so why does it have anything to do with evolution. Perhaps they were created with the natual defence for the hive. Bees are just mostly drones and workers the queen is the one that tells them what to do but what do i know.
