I have actually done this myself in a Musical Acoustics class it is truly a sight to see! You can also do this yourself with the salt you have around the kitchen, a metal plate and a violin or cello bow to vibrate the plate.

Basically what is going on is the metal plate (called a Chladni plate) is attached to a special motor which vibrates the plate at variable frequencies (the machine I used had a knob that turned the frequency higher or lower). Whenever this combination hits natural frequencies, or harmonics, of the plate (these are frequencies that cause an object to resonate... think of how you can only play a handful of frequencies on a bugle), the salt forms standing wave patterns.

The salt drifts off of the vibrating anti-nodes on the plate and collects on the motionless nodes (if you think of a jump rope, the middle of the rope would be an anti-node and the handles, where there is no movement, would be the nodes.)

As the frequencies go higher and higher, the upper harmonics are being excited, and the patterns in the salt are becoming more and more complex. This is because the higher the harmonic, the more nodes and anti-nodes are in the standing wave.

Perhaps this has been rather confusing but if you don't understand you can always google any of the terms mentioned. Also to those that mentioned the crop circles, I googled that out of curiosity and sure enough, there are actually crop circles (Froxfield and Harwell) that are basic geometric shapes derived from standing wave patterns.

That is, without a doubt, the most incredible thing I've seen on metacafe. The fact that harmonic resonance can produce patterns like that just totally blows me away! Does anyone have any resource or information about this effect?
