Alex Smith was the teams number-1 draft pick in 2005 but had a poor 2007 season that led to a rift with his head coach. Smith played in 7 games during an injury-riddled 2007 season, passing for only 2 touchdowns and only averaging 130 yards passing per game. Backup Shaun Hill appeared in 3 games last season and led the 49’ers to 2 victories in December. Hill completed 68-percent of his passes while throwing for 5 TD’s and only 1 interception. J.T. O’Sullivan was brought over from Detroit as he served as a backup last season. O’Sullivan is the only quarterback on the roster with experience under Mike Martz’ system.
