My grandmother show me this when I was small, when we were waiting for food and I get bored. I thought it is a commonly known tricks. But I think kids nowadays will play nds instead of toothpicks while waiting for food..

I know this trick for some years now and it ain't a string pulling them appart, it is just water and very dry wood, the moment the dry wood gets in contact with water will start to move (due to changing its consistency)

Do not break the toothpick completely!! The two halves must still be connected. Now go and buy toothpicks and tell your friends you are smater than a 5th grader.
