- It's basic
one toothpick broken in half but still attached at an angle, add water and the wood soaks it up and expands pivoting around the point where they're still joined

I know this trick for some years now and it ain't a string pulling them appart, it is just water and very dry wood, the moment the dry wood gets in contact with water will start to move (due to changing its consistency)
