in Beckhams defence this vid is poor quality but if u watch as he plants his foot to bring the other through to kick it seems to slip in fact on the replay on TV the patch around the spot was very sandy and the turf broke up. Thats why after the kick he turns and looks at the spot. it was just bad luck 9 times out of 10 that would have hit the net and the goalie was diving the wrong way .... sh!t happens

About the off foot, notice where he places it. It is so close to the ball that Beckham was probably going for the outisde of the ball with his shooting foot. Riccardo commits to the left side of the goal. This is because Beckham's original intent was probably to shoot to that side, so it was a good read by Riccardo. I bet, at the last moment, Beckham knew this and tried to, without any premeditation, pop it into the right side of the goal. Thats why indecisiveness in pks is murder.

If you'd had the opportunity to watch the full set of PKs you'd notice how the turf around the left side of the penalty spot was wrecked and how every other penalty taker learned from Beckham's misfortune and placed the ball so they didn't have to place their standing foot in the same spot. Beckam might be over-rated, but he's NEVER bottled a penalty before and he's taken plenty. Remember the pen against Argentina in World Cup 02? He buried it straight down the middle. the ball does move just a little bit!!!! i thought it was these guys bitching and complaining. i mean, everybody has their off days, but you can see, especially in the second showing. also, it helps, when the video starts, right click on the screen and go down to the option where it says, play speed, choose slow, and you can see it a little bit slower, the guys voice will sound weird, but you can see everything a little bit slower, which helps, and by god the ball did move just a litle bit, which might have thrown off his shot. it is simple physics, when you bend it, you have to hit it just right, and maybe he got under it more than he would have normally. i dunno, maybe he just fucked up totally, but shit happens.

when becks took tha penalty the penalty spot was in very bad shape and it caused the ball to move before he could strike it. it effected the other players aswell. as to his gameplay becks is one of the best passers in the world. his delivery is WORLD CLASS and can pick out any player at any distance at any time. anybody can hit a ball but its about percision and david has got it

if you actually watched the full match (I did) then you'd notice a small boggy patch of grass beckham points out to the ref, he asked for a re-take but he wouldn't allow it after he slipped on it. He wasn't the only one to either. Fortunately for Portugal they learned from his mistake and never managed to slip on the grass and knocked England out on penalties grrrrrrrrrrrrr

watch the penalty spot, its woser than a childs sand pit. This math was on during my secondary school prom, and all the guys were crowded round a TV watching it, trust me the penalty spot moves, watch it again and focus on the spot just before he kicks it. Who knows if it had gone in if it hadnt move but thats the reason it went so badly off.

There already were earlier complaints about soft ground at the penalty kick area but nothing was done about it. Beckham's left foot ended up right into the soft spot which then pushed the ball up and he ended up skying the ball. Too bad....

It was the pitches fault. Beckam kicks by first placing his leading food quite close to the ball then sweeps the ball with his other foot. On this crappy pitch it was based on sand and the turf was moving. Later on in the world cup the same pitch had its penalty spots replaced. On a more detailed video you can see the pitch deforming as he took the shot. Also if you see other penalties of the same match whenever someone took a penalty sand was kicked up everywhere.
