in Beckhams defence this vid is poor quality but if u watch as he plants his foot to bring the other through to kick it seems to slip in fact on the replay on TV the patch around the spot was very sandy and the turf broke up. Thats why after the kick he turns and looks at the spot. it was just bad luck 9 times out of 10 that would have hit the net and the goalie was diving the wrong way .... sh!t happens

About the off foot, notice where he places it. It is so close to the ball that Beckham was probably going for the outisde of the ball with his shooting foot. Riccardo commits to the left side of the goal. This is because Beckham's original intent was probably to shoot to that side, so it was a good read by Riccardo. I bet, at the last moment, Beckham knew this and tried to, without any premeditation, pop it into the right side of the goal. Thats why indecisiveness in pks is murder.

Beckham is not the best freekick taker... one of the best though. He is probably the best pure #7 in the game. I am not a great fan of his but u cannot deny his talent. He missed a penalty kick so what... so did Roberto Baggio and many other big name players. Besides i'll rather have my stopper or sweeper take a pk than my attacker or midfielder.
