(watch the spaces - or just search for the title)

now this is a statement for the safety of the car. and just look at the drivers cell. its still all in tacked.

this little car is safer than many of your american SUVS, believe it or not.

    • Probably

But don't make this an American thing, that car is probably safe than most cars. Does it always have to come down to Americnan this or that? are you thinking of us that much? get out, go do something.

    • He's right

No car ever fairs well from an off centre head on collision. The difference is that the Smart Car absorbs the damage by bouncing off and rolling around... leaving the belted up driver safe.

In a mercedes you get your legs crushed. (when your hit by another mercedes... when your hit by a smart car you get a dented bumper)

    • Other way around

When the smart car hits the benz, not only does the forward energy disipate in a second, but energy the other way is imparted by the benz and the smart car is flying off. This means the car is not safer, but more dangerous because it bounced around. The reason cars have crumple zones is to reduce the highest G-Force by spreading the force out over a period of time. This saves lives because a human body can endure these lower G-forces over an extended period of time (less than two seconds), but not an extremely high G-force for almost any period of time (over 120 G's).
The smart car hits the benz, goes bouncing around. Think of if that is your brain which was stopped from 45mph to 0 and then sent flying backwards at 20mph in the same time the benz goes from 45 to 0. The benz on the other hand expends that energy and stops. Your brian doesnt bounce around, your neck stays intact.

    • haha...

smart cars make it safer for us without them, because when we hit a smart car, we get a dented bumper... they get a broken face... muahahahaha..

    • you're right

It doesn't mean anything that the car keeps its body intact, any passenger will suffer from G deceleration.
In another vid you can see a Smart crashing into a wall at 100 kph (60 Mph I think..) and the cell remains the same as before.Needless to say that the driver inside that car would be dead for not having the space (related to time) for decelerating.

..like Hitler rolled over Poland in '39. I guess it's just the nature of German things.

Later, the MB will take on a Yugo, then a Renault, then a Fiat, then an MG, then a Volga, and finally lose to a Hummer.

and also an engineer who used to work on bodyshells for Jaguar, I think they're pretty safe. You are better off in the Mercedes because its a heavy premium car. However, we can't all afford these (or we don't want to grow into a boring middle class bloke with a paunch). Interestingly, the figures show that SUV's are not particularly safe, although they fare well in car-on-car collisions, their inherent instability means they are far more likely to suffer single vehicle collisions.

  • I have a Smart Car

It is one of the safest cars you can drive.
It basically has a safety cell which is like driving in a big roll cage.
You are also sat quite high up so the visibility is very good.
I have known people have serious crashes in these cars, and they have walked away... and they have all bought another smart because they are so safe.

    • in addition,

why do you need a hugh car to move around town (if that's where you live). 4x4 are safer in a collison but take longer to stop (as the are heavier). Since the average traffic speed in cities are about 25kph why worry about high speed crashes. insurance premiums lower as are the fuel costs. The money you save could be used to pay for good health insurance. beside if you crash, there is always someone to sue; the other driver, the city, the owner of the dog that walked in front of you, the old granny who happened to be walking by, whoever!

    • On big cars...

The reason these smaller cars are deemed not safe is because they are smaller and lighter than everything else on the road. They'd be just as safe as anything if they were the only thing on the road!

It's like the gun problem. People want a gun to protect their family. But by having a gun they are selfishly making the world less safe for everyone else.
And when someone buys a big car, they may be more safe themself but make a more dangerous road for everyone else!

And when a bigger better model comes out everyone needs to go buy it. The cars manufactured get bigger and bigger. It's a self perpetuating problem.

    • Can you explain?

I'm very interested in your opinion - can you explain what makes it 'impractical and pointless' please? I look forward to hearing from you.

By Prick in Silverton 1149490278 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Yes,

I will be honest, it is my subjective, personal, opinion. I took a close look at a Smart car at a car show, and the first thing that struck me was how small it was.

Sitting inside it, I felt like I was on a raised go-kart with a body. I thought that if you had two people and their luggage, it would be a very tight fit!. And this was in the "four-seater" version.

From a safety aspect, well, I would feel very unsafe in the car, in any sort of accident, unless it is a minor bumper-bashing type collision.

It does seem to be the perfect car for slow speed, short to medium distance, city driving, but that is about it, and that is not the sort of driving I do, even if I wanted to.

By DrDugg 1149574525 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Well. there's a point..

The Smart car in this video has just two seatings. Its practical for you if you just want to travel the rest of your life with only "one" another person ---- I wonder how long will that go on --- unless you are planning on starting a family. Secondly, there is literally no luggage at all. -- do ever travel with a lot of luggage?? If not, then this is the car for you. Well I do not say the car completely pointless or impractical, nor am i the person you asked the question -- sorry 'bout that, but i assume that it is on the above terms that i've metioned that DrDrugg has said the car is pointless and impractical. I would say that despite the above shortcomings, this car is cute, fuel efficient and easily manuerable. I love this car for the sheer driving pleasure it offers. But don't like it for its price. $25,000 is a bit too much for that tiny thing provided that you get a Honda Civic for $ 21,000

  • Wow.

Just for kicks and giggles, I would ride the Smart so i could spin. The crash rating on that car is spectacular,i saw a video of it doing 70 into a wall and it barely bent it.

    • which means

ud be as good as dead. the smart cars dont smash because they dont absorb any shock. it all gets transferred to you. they are the most deadly car to have an accident in currently in this country.

    • Smart cars(Yea F**king right)

This is a true story, some guy was driving his 'Smart' car to work one morning, it was a nice summer morning as well and just shagged his kids. About 5 mins after he left his house, he was doing about 40 mph on the by pass. Out of no where a bumble bee hit his windscreen causing the smart to flip 13 times in the air and then another 24 times on the ground. The Smart car was found across a half a mile of road, in small pieces, including the driver. The bumble bee died of its injurys a few days later. Its a sad story, but all im trying to point out is that Smart cars arent safe if even a small bumble bee can cause such a horrific accident. So be smart people and dont get in one of these plastic/tin mother fuckers.

  • Hmmmm

The frame is fine, but Smart car's driver's neck, both arms and legs are broken.
I would still buy one for about $8000-10,000, but noway it's worth $20k

By HumanH 1154763731 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • The Smart bounced ...

... but that's what you'd expect - as it's about half the weight of the merc. The interesting thing is that the safety cage of the smart seemed little more damaged than the safety cage of the merc.

Yes, the video suggests the occupants of the smart might have suffered from higher accelerations than those of the merc (inevitable, due to the difference in weight) but the crushing damage to both sets of occupants might have been very similar.

I personally think this clip does not show the smart in a bad light, safety-wise. What is unfortunate is that the clip did not show the damage to both vehicles in detail so that we could make a PROPER judgement.

  • To those...

...who say Smart and all other lawnmowers out there are preactical for parking!
    Here is my question!

    - Do you buy a car to park it good or to drive it good??? Safety is most important for me. I think I'm right to say: bigger is safer, especially today's cars.
