I shot this on May 1, 2006. A nice view of lightning striking the Empire State Building. It happens several times a year but usually you can't see it because it's in the clouds. The video and audio is untouched. The replay is slowed down to 10%.

i messed up the date
as if it matters, I shot this on June 1st (just a week ago) not May 1st, I can't figure out how to edit that.

Also I think the bolt reflected off the window in front of me which makes it look a little weird when it first appears.

I've found estimates that say the building is hit about 100 times a year. This one happened at the very end of the storm though which made for a great view. I only had to wait about 3 minutes with the camera before it happened and I was lucky I was zoomed out.

By the way, it was 1945 when a B-52 crashed into the 79th floor. The building amazingly had only minor damage. Now THAT video would be cool to see.

- Fantastic footage.
  One small detail, the aircraft that flew into the building was a B25 "Mitchell" Bomber, of, WWII vintage. A twin-engine radial. Yes, I am an aircraft aficionado.

  I must have been typing my comment about 100x per year at the same time you were!. BTW, the 'effect' of the lighting appearing in the lower part of the frame is a result of the way the camera scans the scene and because the initial stroke is extreemely fast that only part of the entire path is caught on tape.

  I actually think it happens when I encode the video to quicktime or windows media, the "doubling effect" doesn't happen in Final Cut Pro before I compress it. Oh well. It doesn't take too much away from it.

Woah, lightning strikes the Empire State Building and it doesn't fall. Didn't even melt. It was even struck by a plane sixty years ago and is still standing. That's one tough building.

  Sarcasm? If not - DUH. Lightning probably hits this building 100 times a year. Besides, lightning ISNT as powerful as everyone believes. One bolt is about enough electricity to power a 100W bulb for less than one hour.
