It's not just the voice - it's the effect of the voice, the emotions it stirs in the listener, as well as performance and artistry.

Objectively speaking Cook's voice isn't the greatest, but he's a brilliant artist & performer, he touches people and I believe Cook is going to be a legend!

Whereas David Archuleta is going to be a singer...

samrlim, maybe in your world, but look at the view count differences between them here on the tube. Check out their iTunes sales. I don't know what sense of the word you're using, but he's nothing compared to the popularity of Mr. Cook

He didn't "butcher" the national anthem. It wasn't up to his usual standard, but it continues to demonstrate that he can lose the raspy rock edge when he wants to and sing just about anything. He's the Elvis of the idols.

I thought his answer to Simon's comments was honest and right on. He could have played it safe, but that's not David. He was still competing, not against Archie, but against himself. Simon obviously rethought what he'd said and apologized. This is what makes David so great and Simon a terrific judge. He will admit when he's wrong.

why ?

The key to his success is pretty simple. It's how every Idol winner has done it. They know who they are, they pick songs they know they can sing well, and if you're David Cook, all that stuff doesn't matter because you can sing anything. His rendition of the Phantom of the Opera song was unbelievable.
