  Freak is a 16th century English word meaning a capricious or unusual thing. The idiom “Freak of Nature” was used in Victorian Britain to mean any unique event, object or person. Freak only acquired a negative connotation in the 1950-60s due the “freak scene”, a post-hippie bohemian subculture. It was then that the conservative mainstream used the term "Freak" as a pejorative.
