It's part of our genetic makeup. Those of us who are civilized resist those base urges. Others do not. Hell, I know a lot of people who are in "open" marriages, where they have sex with multiple partners on a regular basis. Some people do not see sex and monogamy as important things. Long and boring personal story, but the end result was that I dated one particular woman for 2 years in college and found out she cheated while on summer break. We obviously split. According to them, only men cheat. When a man does it, he's a dog, period. When a woman does it, she's a poor, mistreated wife/girlfriend/paramour who's trying to find someone to take her hurt away, or at least trying to "get even" when it comes to the way society wants us to think.
