The Payatas dumpsite tragedy in the Philippines, happened on July 10, 2000. At 8:05am a massive 50ft wall of solid waste slides down and buries hundreds of shanties, and an undetermined number of people. Bulldozers excavated the site while residents dug with their bare hands and whatever tools they could find to try to rescue victims. This is the story of what happened that day, and about the people who live and work sorting out the trash. This is also helps to explain why these people make this their choice of making their lively hood. It helps to explain why thousands of migrants from farming and rural communities flock to Manila to seek an income and provide for their families.
