Yes we know Americans waste water. Some take forty minute sixty gallon showers. Some enjoy watering the grass during the rain. We leave the faucets running and flush the toilet hundreds of times a day. Bottled water is a billion dollar industry. The only thing we use more than water is OIL!

This muscle movement you speak of is called peristalsis, which moves food through the entire G.I. tract. The trachea is blocked by the epiglotis during swallowing.

First no, gravity does not have anything to do with swallowing. It is muscles if you don't believe me take a mouth full of something hand upside down and swallow it. It works exactly the same.
