  • Dancing!

Jun Fan is right, this form of Wushu is actually meant to be more of a performance or a dance, not a martial art. It's true that traditional Wushu was originally a combat martial art. Communist China isnt really big on letting their citizens learn how to defend themselves, so Wushu has become modernized into a dumbed down version of a martial art. It is now a choreographed gymnastic dance known as modern Wushu. Research it for yourself, watch a modern Wushu artist vs. a traditional Wushu artist. Watch someone doing traditional Xingyiquan or Baguazhang and notice that they dont do high jumps or spinning mid air flips or backflips, these flamboyant techniques are added for show.

    • dancing for self defense

is not new. I believe some martial arts were practiced in dance form in order to hide from authorities who frown on such activities. The brazailians did this when they developed capoeira.

    • You just tried

and get in front of them and see if you can handle those moves. It looks like dancing that is why it's call Arts, but when in actual combat it might vary a little bit depend on their opponents. Anyhow, for every martial art, there kartas (forms) that one has to learn. Ever look at taichi? It looks graceful but try and fight one who does know taichi...

this is what the world of martial arts is coming to.
Nowadays people practice 'Wushu' or mordern martial arts. And mainly the meaning of this form is for show and to look pretty. This way they win competitions. However, this form of martial arts is not effective bacause you NEVER see people doing this during a fight. Not only is it unrealistic, it is also very ineffective.

    • what did you just say??

wushu provides one with full control over his/her bodily actions. practicing it develops skills like agility, flexibility, strength, and even hyper sensitivity that when he/she is attacked, she will be able to read the attacker's moves and thus enabling one to react ahead of the opponents. how can you say it's ineffective and unrealistic if you havent even tried it yourself??besides, if you were the attacker, do you think you even stand a chance against those agile and fast people?? duh!!

    • wait there's more

if you'll say an opinion about "ineffectivity", i guess you should not refer to the martial art itself. you don't have the right. its art created and developed by ancient people you havent even met. i guess if you'll comment on "ineffectivity" you should refer to the practitioners and not the martial arts because they are the ones who make it ineffective.

    • You idiot

do you even know what wushu is? Wushu IS about forms, they don't train just to fight like MMA people. Not everyone takes martial arts to kick someones ass, there's more to it then you think. Also, what do you mean "coming to" Wushu has been around for quite awhile you moron

    • Are you stupid

      1. The reason you dont see anyone do this in a fight is because you dont know anybody that can do these moves.

      2. Yes they are used in fights because people like you seem to think a fight is somebody walking up and headbutting somebody else.
      - Any martial artist knows how to read body language therefore they know when they are going to be attacked and ALLWAYS strike first.
      - They are DEFINATELY affective, because they can use these moves from range (tornado kicks, jumping spinning hook kicks, etc). And to be honest I would rather fight from range where I am in control than being pummled on the floor.
