I've surfed waves much bigger than those,but with nowhere as much speed.
By the time you see the whitewash hitting the shore it's too late,but while they're rolling in,the look relatively normal.
Normal swell is generated through the weather & wind,but these just sprung out of nowhere,hence the amount of speed they generated....

This is the first time that a tsunami hit Malaysia. In fact, some of the people does not even heard of the word. So it is not a shock if the cameraman did not run away coz he may be had no idea what is coming...

And to the bitch that said bad things about Malaysia, you are son of a *^%#! Do not pretend civilised and said other people is not civilised. What do you know about civilisation! I am really sure if the Government of Malaysia know that there would be a tsunami, they will built a tsunami detector. For all the people who are to dumb to stay up with current events that is the tsunami that hit thailand 2 years ago on boxing day. over 30,000 were killed in the disaster. it was completely surprise and that is why there was all the confusion. the earth quake was hundreds of miles away and they had no warning of the water. It is not that the waves are large, it is that the displacement of water caused the sea level to rise almost 30 feet in some areas in a matter of minutes. if you type in tsunami on the search you will see many such tapes on this site. the people had know idea of the destruction that was coming with that wave. as a foreigner it would look just like a great wave to catch a surf on not knowing it was really a harbinger of doom. i find it hard to believe so many of you have no recolection of the largest natural disaster known to man in the last 10 years. only every country in the world posted massive relief efforts and concerts to send money to all those displaced. maybe some of you should spend less time looking at videos and more time seeing what is going on in the world around you.

If you search death toll it says that sri lanka has lost just over 30,000 people in the tsunami. What i was commenting on is that people saying is was 20 foot waves or when did it happen. just amazed that something like this happened and people didn't know. if i remember correctly 60,000 died on the first day alone. (and the # of dead actually listed for malaysia is 68) the majority of the damage was in indonesia. sorry for the somewhat inaccurate post. my bad

Tsunami's that are caused by earthquakes really don't get much bigger then 10 meters high. As they are caused by the uplift of the earths crust. But there has been a case of a Mega Tsunami that was caused by an enormous landslide that reached a over 550 meters tall. Bigger then the largerst skyscraper in the world. Luckily in a remote area so the dmg was minimal. maybe 4 deaths if I remember.
But it is amazing to see so many people did not realize what was comming even when the wave was visable. So many deaths caused by nuts with camera's standing on the beach saying " Wow look at that wave comming to us! OMG it just took out that boat! Wow its like a wall of water! Man I hope nobody... gurgle.. gurgle.."

There is no record anywhere of a wave 550 metres high. A father and son reported one which was 300 metres high and washed their boat "over the trees". But I think that was a "Fishermans Tale"

As you can see. this tsunami was over 500 m high. And like I said this was a show that came on Discovery channel. I am sure that you can order the tape or something if you wish to see it. The segmant was titled Mega Tsunami. P.S Had to seperate link as it would not let me post anything over 15 characters.
If you look at the third paragraph of the link you sent you'll see that the wave tore up the mountainside 524 metres but the open water wave was quoted as being 50-150 metres.

This wave was caused by an avalanche into a small bay area. The water could not reach that high because of the shallow waters compared to the open ocean.

You are confusing what MIGHT happen with what DID happen.
The Tsunami in Thailand was nothing like what you said. BUT if for example the fault across the Grand Canaries activates and causes a huge land slip that will take out the whole of the Eastern seaboard of the USA plus parts of the UK and many other countries. The wave in this case would be in the order of 500 feet high by the time it hit New York and Boston.

550 meter high waves are called Mega Tsunami. Look it up on the internet. as to my souce. I have a recorded episode from Discovery channel talking about a mega tsunami that actuall took place and was witnessed. I am sure you could google it somewhere.

I believe that the children would have survived that wave although the family was certainly shocked by it. It is a reminder how precious life is however and how it can end quickly from the wrath of nature though I hope that this family did live.
