Arc Flash While Racking a Breaker

for about 10 years, and that man didn't have any where near the required safety gear to survive that blast. The temp in there reached easilly 2000F. Hot enought to vaperize copper. NOT MELT, VAPERIZE. I doubt he survived, let that be a lesson, arcflash is serious and WILL kill you if your not propperly dressed. Even propperly dressed that man would have sustained heavy injury anyway.

Oh he's definitly racking in that breaker, Probably had a load on but maybe not. It could have been wet, a faulty breaker. I'll give a scenario. We received a breaker (4160v) Breaker repaired and tested at a lab with paper work that it can be racked in. The breaker would not go into the cabinet after trying a couple of times. We removed the breaker to inspect for damage or something. We found that the lab left two shunt bars across the load and feed sides of the breaker. If it were not for the shutters in the cabinet, there would have been atleast two dead people there that day. The blast in this video, without a doubt that man died and was not wearing the proper protective gear that would not have helped anyway fromt he type of blast he was exposed to. OSHA only recognizes up to 40 CAL suits because a direct blast any larger your going to die anyway. We have 100 CAL suits but that's just so they have something to bury after the blast. yea, you won't be burned but the concusion is definitely going to kill you. This guy was well over 40 CAL, Vaporized Copper went straight through his body.

i think he is not racking in he is racking out the switch gear without turn it off so that means there is a big load this what happend ??????? iam an electrical technician.

Does anybody have the details as to where this incident occured? I am presently working for a Power utility and the video is circulating around the office. People are questioning the video?

freeze frame at 00:17 and u will see the guy engulfed in flames,at 00:18 he is lying on the floor in flames.....

he went zap with the flash, no question about it. frame by framed it.

Looks like the poor fella was racking in a high voltage breaker with a short circuit on the load side. The temperature in the heart of the arc flash was about 10,000 deg F - hotter than the surface of the sun! All copper and aluminum was volitalized.

That looked pretty serious. I hope that guy is alright.

if you see towards end of video, i saw him escaping towards the back door while still on flame... i think he survived. You can watch this by serial of pauses & plays till the end of video
