Ann tries to tell a Canadian journalist on CBC Newsworld that Canada sent troops to Vietnam...
A friend of mine who has dual citizenship enlisted in the Canadian army to avoid getting drafted by the US. In the Canadian army he was one of 500 Canadian soldiers in Vietnam sent in advisor capacity. Although officially they were not there for combat, individuals did engage in going along on patrols and manning guns on helicopters.
Even so Coulter seems to be exagerating this at best.
Canada's official diplomatic position was as a non-participant, but the country was not neutral in the conflict: it professed explicit support for the United States. Canada was also a major supplier of equipment and supplies to the American forces. Under UN rules Canada could not send these directly to South Vietnam, but they could sell them to the United States. Throughout the Vietnam War Canadian manufacturers profited greatly from the conflict. These included relatively benign items like boots and whiskey, but also napalm and Agent Orange the use of which was fiercely opposed by antiwar protesters at the time.
Concurrent with the draft dodging and defections to Canada, several thousand Canadians joined the U.S. military and fought with the Americans in Vietnam; estimates range from 3,500 to 10,000. Several thousand more Canadians joined and served with the U.S. military but did not fight in Vietnam. One hundred and ten (110) Canadians died in Vietnam and seven remain listed as Missing in Action.
..that's mean Canada did not sent troops to Viet Nam, just the Canadians joined the US army.
Just making sure.
Your argument has moved me to tears... It is such a convincing and heart-felt opinion that I cannot possibly respond with any alacrity. It has struck to the bone of the issue and decries any further debate! Well done sir!

By Aguila05 1150398432 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeshe's kinda right, but mostly wrong - a few things to ponder:
-approx. 10,000 canadian men enlisted in the us military and fought in vietnam
-in 1973, the canadian gov't sent canadian troops to vietnam for operation gallant, under the auspices of the iccs
-the silly bitch's point appears to be that canada-us relations were better in that period, which is true as we know that while attempting to appear impartial, canada at that time was supplying intel and war materiel to the us and south vietnam - this even included the development, testing, and manufacture of agent orange at cfb gagetown, nb
like it or not....no matter what you call them Canada was in vietnam

Canada as a nation never sent troops to Vietnam, but Canadians did in fact join the US Army and serve in that theatre:
“Concurrent with the draft dodging and defections to Canada an estimated 10,000 Canadians joined the U.S. military and fought with the Americans in Vietnam, and several thousand more Canadians joined and served with the U.S. military but did not fight in Vietnam. 110 Canadians died in Vietnam and seven remain listed as Missing in Action. Many of these were Canadians who had long lived in the United States, Canadians with US citizenship who were drafted or had previously served in the U.S., and out-of-work soldiers who had been the victims of recent government cutbacks. Still others volunteered because of ideological or moral support of the American war effort.[1] This cross border enlistment was not unusual: in both World War I and World War II tens of thousands of Americans had joined the Canadian forces while their homeland was still neutral. Canadian Peter C. Lemon won the U.S. Medal of Honor for his valour in the conflict.

This guy is playing word games. During the years 1954 to 1975 Canada served on 2 international truce commissions and provided medical supplies and technical assistance. Canadian diplomats were involved in negotiations between Washington and Hanoi and successive Canadian governments, both Liberal and Conservative, maintained that Ottawa was an impartial and objective peacekeeper, an innocent and helpful bystander negotiating for peace and administering aid to victims of the war. However, Cabinet papers, confidential stenographic minutes of the truce commissions as well as top-secret American government cables revealed Canada to be a willing ally of US counter insurgency efforts.

By zzroach 1150400163 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhile Canada did not directly send its own troops to Vietnam, it did supply aid and allowed the US to test weapons (such as Agent Orange) on its own soil. They also aided the French there previously. Some 3k to 10k Canadian men (at the same time a number of US citizens were fleeing to Canada) came to the US and enlisted to go to Vietnam.
Check out Wikipedia : Canada and the Vietnam War
However, She did say "Canada sent troops to Vietnam" and that was a totally incorrect statement. Remember, this woman is a writer and knows to have her facts accurate.
The fact that she refused to "back down" from her statement shows (as other things that she has done and said) that she has such a huge ego, that she just can't admit that she made a mistake.
Personally, I have no problem with intelligent women (in fact, I love talking with them), but intelligent women that also are arrogant and egocentric generally have serious emotional problems and don’t do well with personal relationships. I strongly suspect that Ann Coulter fits this bill. Also, I have a description for women like Ann Coulter – I refer to them as “intelligent airheads lacking wisdom and discernment.â€Â
Take care, and keep your intellignet comments coming. Wikipedia - don't you just love their web site? Iit's a great source for information!
referring to Ann Koulter, except that she does not have one. She actually has two assholes, three if you count her mouth.
By Absofsteel 1216932942 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveMy brother in law, from Montreal, joined the Marines and fought in Vietnam. He was blown up and recovered in the U.S. He married a girl from Boston and lived there for the rest of his life. He had two kids who are Americans. When he died a couple years ago, he was given full military honors.

Canada sent large amount s of medical supplies and aide to US and South Vietnamese troops and they supported US action in the conflict. So, Ann is that that far off base and is certainly not "dumb."

By professor yuks 1150391716 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveFor an American political commentator and author, she's pretty dumb. She really needs to brush up on her history before she attempts to even open her mouth.

Ms. Coulter is nothing more than an opportunist with the IQ of a kumquat who found a way to make money by taking part in the culture wars. She knows squat about world events, politics, or any other important issues, but because she can eloquently rant about how much she hates people, she has been given some kind of credibility that used to be given to more intelligent people like William F. Buckley.
I guess all it takes to be considered a political pundit these days is to find better ways of insulting liberals or conservatives and of finding an equally stupid audience ready to shell out money for your books.
Wow! She's gotten smarter since last time.

2) www.spp.org -- the US and Canada (as well as mexico) have already signed an agreement to act as ONE DISCRETE economic entity and trading partner, effectively uniting us under one economic banner... and I don't mean NAFTA... I am talking about an alliance like the EU.
Coulter's point therefore, is complete bullshit. Canada was a marginal ally if at all during VietNam, and was never open about involvement... whereas NOW of all times, Canada is an ally in the war on Terror, Drugs, and emergency planning against Bird Flu.
Coulter is one of those people who spew out attack verbage for the sole purpose of selling books. She attacks the wives of the 911 victims ruthlessly, and non apologetically, only because of their political affiliation. When the same 'tactics' the wives use is done by 'her' party (laughable because intelligent conservatives avoid her like plague), she ignores them or defends them.
Coulter's version of 'fact checking' involves whatever ad hominem attack fits the point she is trying to make at the moment, regarless of the actual (or factual) relevence.
I honestly feel she should do something about her attitude and adams apple.

By white trash 1150389889 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeand her comments still seem really strange. She was trying to make the point that Canada and the US used to cooperate on military missions, and she used the example of the Vietnam War. This was wrong, but excusable. I can understand how an American could get confused about which wars Canada did or did not participate in. However, when the reporter corrected her and then listed examples of wars in which Canada did participate, why didn't she just back down? Her point (That Canada and the US used to act as allies) was still validated by the examples the reporter gave, so why did she make a big deal about the Vietnam War? If she had just said "Oh, my mistake, I must have been misinformed about Vietnam" it would have been no big deal. Instead she made herself look like an idiot. Weird.
By AndrewL 1150389691 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHer recent outburst against the 9/11 widows (whom she called "witches") also showed her to be a vociferous zealot
By XS 1150390947 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeif you read the book then you would realize she did not have an outburst against the "9/11 widows" she did however point out that the jersey girls ( 4 of the 9/11 widows) have been used as political tools for the left and have used their there tradgedy as a form of immunity for talking points. basically they want people to think that because they were victims of 9/11 ( btw thousands of people were hurt just as much if not more than these four women) you cant disagree with their views.
By gregbmwguy 1150433067 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI don't believe that anyone said that her outburst was in her book, as it was not. She made her comment on TV, in front of a live audience. She called the four 9/11 widows "witches" which was very thoughtless, inconsiderate, and insensitive.
