I was there that day. I even got a ride in this car. It is PURE electric. This car is called the X1, and it's a prototype built by Ian Wright himself. Google "wrightspeed" to see more.

This car goes from 0-60 in 3 seconds, which matches the acceleration stats of a Bugatti Veyron, a $1.3 million car. However, this one cost only $150k to build. The X1 may not have the Bugatti's top speed, but who cares? This car has only one gear, and no transmission or clutch, and because of that, the torque is outstanding!

One of the best things about this car is the efficiency. Battery technology is currently improving in performance and cost. As it is, it can go 200 miles on a charge, and Ian apparently drove it from San Francisco to LA on $7 worth of electricity. Compare that to the $100 in gas it cost me for the same trip in my little 4-banger Subaru.

    • Oops, I mean...

It can go 150 miles on a charge.

Electric cars are coming fast. The one I want most right now (close to being on the market) is the ZAP-X Crossover (Google zapworld to see it). That's the real deal. It has an electric motor in each wheel. It has 644 horsepower, goes 0-60 in about 4.8 seconds, has a top speed of 155mph, has photovoltaic windows (meaning they double as solar panels), regenerative braking (hitting your brakes re-charges the battery, and you never pay for brake pads again), you can go 350 miles on a single charge, you can charge the battery in 10 minutes, and the battery lasts for 9,000 charges. And best of all, the batteries are biodegradable Li-ion.

What you see in this clip was a day of filming for the trailer to an upcoming film by James Fox. The footage you see and the narration is done by CBS, who was there covering the story. They did a crap job, if you ask me. The footage by Energy Next is in HD.

Get ready for some very, very cool electric cars in the near future!

    • Oops, I mean...

It was NBC that did the story.

  • Not Electric

Its a 300bhp supercharged honda engine.
The car weights only 450 kgs and can do less than 3 sec from 0-60 mph.
    from:
    Sunday Times (Atom 300 Supercharged)

'And then came the Atom. Watching it leave the line was like watching a controlled explosion. It had such an overwhelming surfeit of power its driver didn't even bother using first gear. He simply selected second, dropped the clutch and disappeared. On the surface we'd have been stunned if it had hit 60mph in 3.1 sec but, when all six runs were completed, these were the numbers we were faced with: the 'slow' run into the wind took 2.94 sec, the return just 2.88 sec, to give an average 0-60mph of 2.91 sec.'

  • YESS!!

We have got to keep moving away from oil so we can watch the middle east slide back to the stone age without western money. Keep it up

    By TankDog 1151544867
    • This poster must be from UAE

They want us on oil as long as possable.

      By TankDog 1152329837
    • Excuse me?!?

Watch the middle east slide back into the stone age? Because we don't buy their oil?!?!? Read a book called "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man" to find out what our oil conglomerates really do to those countries. They're much better off without us. Trust me.

the actual car in this video is "ariel atom" based, however i would still take original 2L V-TEC supercharged Honda engine. Much more fun for less money. google for "ariel atom".

    • Consider this...

The electric car you see here cost $150,000 to build. It's about 30% faster than the Ferrari you see it racing, which is worth $170,000.

In my opinion, there's no competition. Electric wins.

  • fukin fake

FAKE FAKE FAKE see carfuly the porrch driver in the bigginin he didn't push full acceletor and he reduce the speed after that F**k this fake theres no powerful more than petrol cars

    By xxxmetacafe 1151584575
    • Oh, and...

The guy in the Porsche wanted a rolling start so as not to burn out his $16,000 clutch. Trust me, every other car driver there really wanted to win those drag races. He was shifting gears when he fell back. Something the X1 does NOT have to do.

      By explotapotomas 1189204747
    • not fake, confused...

its not a fake but its also not an electric car!
Topgear did a report on it.
