  • Probably not a good idea to handle dry

ice with your bare hands, whether youre a 'skilled professional' or not.

    • You sure about that?

      > Probably not a good idea to handle dry ice with your bare hands

Have you ever worked with dry ice yourself? (Also warn everyone against cigarette lighters, since you could easily burn to death or set your house on fire, right?)

Dry ice is harmless as long as you keep moving. If you let it remain in one spot on your skin, it takes a bit longer than one second before you feel sudden pain and receive an invisibly small blister. It's possible to receive a bigger "burn" from it, if you do stupid things.

But that's similar to matches or a candle: don't place your skin directly against the dangerous part for many seconds. Neither open flames nor dry ice are toys for little kids.

    • Great Video

I'm an instrument tech. for a chemical plant, and we use this method to calibrate temperature transmitters. Its a great way to very quickly achieve subzero temperatures

    • I'd probably still use gloves, but you

can do anything you like with it.

    • Dry ice is not that cold

They're about the same as (wet) ice.

    • Dry ice is that cold

Wet ice is 32F, while frosty-cold water-ice might be 0F or a bit lower.

      Dry ice is -110F

    • Low temperature hazard

If pressed against flesh, dry ice is cold enough to cause tissue damage from frostbite. Ranchers use this for "Freeze Branding" of cattle. (After healing, the returning hair grows back white. I wonder if body-modder people have tried that...)

-100F chilled alcohol is worse. There's no gas layer as with dry ice, so it freezes flesh instantly. If small droplets drip off your flowers, don't let them hit your skin. Yowch!

    • Freeze branding

      >I wonder if body-modder people have tried that...

Yes, yes they have. Branding, whether done with extreme heat or cold, is used by body-modders who want something a bit less visible and more striking than a tattoo

    • white hair

      I wasn't clear enough.

I wonder if they know the trick to producing stripes of white hair. Cryo-brand a shaved spot on your scalp. Become Lily Munster permanently, or make patterns. The brand itself is under hair and mostly invisible.

    • Dry ice is -109 degrees F. or lower.

That's a whole lot colder than 'wet' ice.

  • Hello

Back in 1975 I had a school teacher pick up dry ice and move it from one container to another and his hand hit the edge of the table and it shattered both his ring and little finger into tiny shardes. You are an idiot for touching dry ice in any manner without gloves or other safety protection.

I could care less about his bare-handed manipulation of the dry ice or the basic ineffectiveness of this concoction for anything more than a beverage cooler, the thing that bothered me is that he used a butcher knife to chop his blocks up. Now that's really friggin dangerous. When breaking up dry ice, you can just use a hammer or slam it on your table, I'd rather have small pieces, which will evaporate quickly anyway, go flying than risk cutting myself. Also, with the hammer there's a neat trick you could do, press the face on the block, it'll vibrate. Not sure why though.

      No, actually it's not.

If I use a knife to cut up a potato or chop onions, I could slip slightly ...AND LOOSE A FINGER!!!!! Using knives for common kitchen tasks is extremely dangerous. (Maybe they should be made illegal!) But if you use one as an ice pick, and if you slip, you'll poke a hole in your kitchen sink. Hmmm, better put a wood block underneath the dry ice. Just in case.

Listen carefully. "Cryo napalm." If you touch it, it burns skin INSTANTLY.

Yes, you'd receive bad burns if you put any of it into your mouth.
