The F1 was designed for track racing, round a track it would beat any other competing road car, including a veyron, due to the F1's great handling, incredible brakes and general race car characteristics. A veyron was simply designed to beat the speed record, so they jammed a 1000bhp engine in a ugly shell. The F1 is much better designed.

The reason any supercar will get away from a Skyline after 100 is purely down to areodynamics, the Skyline is as aerodynamic as a brick compared with something like an F1, so it's always going to be at a disadvantage.

The reason the f1 pulls away from the skyline is a lot more than aerodynamics, what about power to weight ratios, gearing, gearchange speed etc....? Hence my comment was directed at the top end speeds where the F1 is more aerodynamic and has less work to do than the skyline.
Yes gearing is a factor, but imo Aerodynamics are a bigger one in the case of these two cars.
At the end of the day, I don't see the point of doing a test where the precursive comment is 'Really really fast car' in reference to a machine that is standard form. Everyone and his dog knows that the real key to a skyline is not just it's 4 wheel drive 4 wheel steering system but also the RB26 block that is without displacement modification able to push 550bhp reliably with very little on the car changed. A more valid test would have been to use another super car, although a test using a ~500-600bhp skyline would have been much more fair.
This is not a test the outcome was obvious from the start, and I am fully aware of why the skyline is a good car, however a skyline with 550 bhp is not a good car. Production cars with 550hp standard are far better all round. The skyline engine is in the wrong place to beat any decent supercar round a track, no matter how modified it is. You can talk about 4 wheel steering and turbos and whatever else all you want, but when it comes down to it the skyline is just not good enough to compete with supercars, and is beaten here because of its weight, low power and inferior engineering in general. Aerodynamics only come into play at around 40mph, the skyline should be destroying the f1 at this stage if what you say is true but isn't. The f1's engine weight over the rear wheels is increasing traction.

I you rev a Skyline to about 7k RPM and dump the clutch, the Skyline will screach just a little bit but on the whole has traction and away you go.
Try doing that in an F1, and then assess which direction you are facing.

I wonder how many of you have actually been in or driven a Supercar. Pointless as it is to compare an R33 Skyline to an F1 it only serves, as somebody else mentioned to illustrate the real world performance of a Supercar vs a set of figures on paper.
But to say an F1 has a 7.3 ltr engine?, and to say spend half of million on a Skyline and you could get it to be quicker than the F1 is crap. WTF is that about?, sure strap on a rocket motor or a jet engine and that would make it quicker but not better.
You can achieve any speed you want as long as you have sufficient torque, power241, gearing, aero dynamics and downforce. The difficulty is packaging all those factors with any compromises you'd have to make in favor of some things, still make it driveable, have sufficient airflow to allow cooling (about 55% of fuel burned turns into heat so if the engine produces 465Kw as in the F1 then you've got about 500Kw of heat to loose unless you want to melt the engine), and make it reliable. All these things the F1 did wonderfully.
I terms of raw top speed I think you'll find that the limiting factor is the tires. Also note that Mario Andretti mentioned that he felt the F1 was capable of pulling a higher gear ratio than top and that Andy Wallace hit 241mph at 7800rpm which was some way past maxium torque and power.
The F1 is the purest form of road legal super sports car of it's day, and will always rate as one of the finest piston engined Supercars of all time, and the F1 was designed as a road car not a track car, the fact it won by a fantastic margin the '95 Le Mans with a detuned version of the road car engine and carbon brakes, roll cage and a few other mods in the F1 GTR only goes to prove how good the F1 road car actually was/is. F1 GTR engines where guranteed by BMW/McLaren to require no maintainance / service during a seasons racing.
The CEO of Bugatti owns 3 F1's, two GTR's and a road car. He used the F1 to drive from Germany to France everyday at over 200mph.
The beauty of the F1 first and foremost is as anything in life the people behind it, and that's Gordon Murray and the team at McLaren Cars Ltd, secondly using very clever design, materials and packaging they created what they did without the need for fantastic electronic systems and so called driver aids (if you need these WTF are you doing driving a supercar, I'll conceed it should have had switchable ABS but that's all)
Doubtless though the Veyron is very impressive (and I am going to a Bugatti technician soon) I personally think it's more of a technical showpiece for VW and a plaything for rich arabs and movie/football stars rather than a real drivers car. Factor into that the reliability of the thing (4 turbos, 10 radiators, 16 cylinders), how easy do you think such a thing is to repair in the real world?

When you actually own a car how do you enjoy it? You can cruise town showing it off and race people off the lights like a child, or you can take it to a quiet rural road and see how it actually drives. This 0-60 and quarter mile talk is ridiculous; does anybody realise how easy it is to make a 10 second q mile car? It really doesn't require hard thought or precision engineering work. You can just cram custom parts in and rip weight out, without worrying about the useability of the car. Look at any of the companies in Japan who sell modified skylines, they sell them at 600hp with slight modifications all around because you can't sell a 1000hp skyline and be professional. Supercars are designed by some of the best engineers in the world, and the likes of Ferrari are limited mainly by the materials and computing power available at the time of design. To improve on these cars requires real engineering knowledge and not the crap you can learn off the internet. This whole argument is insane. How could a skyline possibly be better than a McLaren F1.

Thats why Veyron took so much time to come out. U are talking of tuned cars, that are prepare to do some fast races...with all the stupid thing in their engines...to get all the hp u can get. Any car designed purly for speed will always beat a modified family car. You can bung all the turbos you like onto it, but will still not have the torque to pull it faster than the F1. That's before we get to the aerodynamics. Believe me, it has a huge effect above 100mph. On paper, a Zonda will cane an XJ220, but the Jag has better aerodynamics and wins by about the distance you see here (another top gear test!).
Judging from the fashion, this is also a long time ago (about 1995), so the Skyline ain't as fast as it is now anyway.

despite how much i love the older skylines (the new ones are now "luxury sport cars") there is no way you can compare it to a million dollar car.
that said, what you pay for when buying a skyline is pretty good for your dollar.
First of all, a heavily modded skyline would kill the McLaren. As stated before, the McLaren would probably beat a skyline around a track, the 4 wheel drive induces massive understeer unless the car is provoked to oversteer. A Skyline around a track with lets say 1000hp is just too much to handle, not to mention turbo lag, and grip issues. Which isn't to say that a Mine's Skyline Version with 650-700 hp, with custom suspension might but the McLaren to test. To answer Scronymans statement. If your McLaren breaks down, they fly a technician to look at your care a.s.a.p. which would include the use of a heli. And no, the Z06, as much as I love it, would not come close to beating a tweaked Skyline or McLaren, in a straight line or around a track.

This video is as lame as an xbox 360. A McLaren F1 Against An R33. But I See A High Performance F1 and a stock R33. I mean if u pay close attention to the video u can see that the R33 Has No Racing Suspension. At Take Off The R33 Rises A Few Inches and stays there for a few seconds. That Would never happen witha good suspension. OKOK THE R33 MAY NOT BE FASTER THEN THE F1.
