It makes you think though doesn't it, this was kinda creepy this clip, I mean ..imagine if something like really did happen ..... everyones running around grabbing their children and family knowing they are going to die. Imagine clutching tight onto someone you love, gripping their hand waiting for the dark hot cloud to reach you and whispering "I'll always love you" into their ear as you cuddle close, eyes closed tight..waiting to die. Thats so sad. Maybe we shouldn't really take it for granted that we are all still here now together, live life to the full me beauties, you only get one. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over this video. The asteroid/meteorite depicted is hundreds of miles wide, a practically nonexistent thing in an earth-crossing orbit. And the kind of impact that wiped out the dinosaurs (10 km diameter comet/asteroid) only happens once every 100 million years, roughly... I think it's safe to say, a large impact won't happen in your lifetime, nor your kids, their kids, their kids, etc.... We will likely wipe out civilization by other means long before then.

Something that huge apparently did hit the Earth in the early days of the solar system when the solar system was still forming. Another planet the size of Mars had hit the early Earth, which resulted in the ejecta from the joint planets forming into the moon. Of course that was before there was any life on Earth, so it was no big deal for life on Earth. I think the Mars-sized planet may have just become absorbed into the Earth afterwards.

An object the meteor's proportions would not appear to move slowly because of its size in relation to earth.
Rather than being able to absorb the energy of the meteor less than a 10th it's mass (about 6.00 e 24 kg, or 6000 billion billion tons), the earth would simply explode into gooey bits, and that gravity, and perhaps along with some liquid dynamics, would play no part in holding things together.
Such a meteorite strike would have enough energy to slow earth's orbital velocity, enough to cause it to fall into the sun.

2) That was a freaking planetoid, not an asteroid - there's no known asteroid in this system (and likely none existing in this system) of that size. There are moons smaller than that beast. Pure fancy, there.
3) With an impact like that, a lot of magma would actually get thrown into space, that dispersion cloud from the video looked about right.
4) It's boiling away from the heat - that kind of impact would raise the temperatures behind the initial shockwave by hundreds if not thousands of degrees.

It took a wild imagination to come up with that vision of a meteor hitting earth. I do agree with the call for religious tolerance particularly among the Muslims who seem to be hell bent on killing off any one who disagrees with their faith. If not a meteor, perhaps a well placed mushroom cloud over the middle east could rid the world of thos who cannot live peacably with others with whom they disagree.
Perhaps Iran will become the nuclear magnet which will speed along this concept. At some point the world powers are going to tire of these petty religious fanatics and dismiss them from the face of the earth. Perhaps even Allah will welcome them someplace. Then again, maybe not.

Anyways the meteor doesn't have to touch the earth to be considered a hit. Such a big meteor would have devastating effects even if it passed by the Earth close enough...It is very big and it would give a "hit" to the Earth spin and orbit anyways, causing devastating effects.

this was a mis representation. The meteo that wiped out the dinosaurs was only about 9 miles across. ..15km? Something the size they're talking about will take the earth off its orbit. Not only that, Earth's gravitational pull will NOT stop the meteor in its tracks as portrayed.

There is no meteor that size. That was a moon and even if something like that hit earth it would split the planet in half and pretty much be instant death for everyone. The end of the world won't happen like that, It will be by the ants when they organize and take us over!
