- You are absolutely right!
  The electric "channel" opens from a cloud and down to the ground, and then the lightning strikes from the ground and up.

Your science teachers are correct
Notice the initial flash of "comet-like" branches. Most die out before reaching ground. However, one does make it, which allows the lightning bolt. Since ground is negative, (excess of electrons) and electricity always flows from negative to positive, the bolt travels up.
