As an aircraft mechanic, the rivet heads in the aircrafts skin burn around the edges, they have to be drilled out inspected replaced and sometimes repaired with a patch! Electronic equipment, usually the radar and its protective cover the radome is burnt which is the very nose of the aircraft. The flap tracks will become magnetized, as well as the prop or engines. They can be degaussed, and remain in service. Depends on how strong of a charge and where it entered and went through the aircraft and where it exited. The lightning is discharged through “static wicks”. Usually if they can’t dissipate the charge, then it will blow small portions of the winglet tips off, and or the horizontal stab tips and sometimes even the rudder tips, where the sheet metal skin is the thinnest. That was actually very interesting, if not somewhat unsettling. I've been in a car once and in a house that was struck by lightning on several occations, and I never got used to the shock of the extreme flash of bright light that will momentarily white-out your vision and the instant and deafening report. It always makes you jump straight in the air.

- Generally, the charge is conducted
through the skin of the aircraft,, without doing too much inside. If there is a problem when lightning strikes an aircraft, knocking out the electronics is usually what that problem is.

I was once in a Gulf Air flight when I saw lightning strike leaving the trailing edge of the wing thro' the steel wire like item neant for this purpose. Nothing happened to the Aircraft.
