Footage of a prisoner stabbing another prisoner 67 (!!!) times. My question is where were the guards? I can understand a couple of stabs, but this is on tape - 67 times!

    In Texas, where McCotter served as director of the Department of Corrections for two years, he faced allegations in 1985 of erasing the parts of a video that showed the beating of a prisoner by a guard. McCotter said that it was an "accident," but the incident leading up to and after the beating were still on the tape. McCotter was only in the nascent stages of his prison administrator career, and, by the time he arrived in Utah, he was a seasoned prison official.
    In Utah, McCotter served five years as director of the Director of Corrections. In July 1994, prisoner Lonnie Blackmon was stabbed 67 times by another prisoner in a Utah state prison while eight guards looked on and did nothing. The lawsuit filed by Blackmon's family said that Blackmon was placed in an area of the prison that housed a majority of white supremacist gang members. Guards cuffed Blackmon and left him in the area "defenseless." While Blackmon was being stabbed, cameras were recording everything. The guards had a high-pressure hose and weapons at their disposal, yet no one acted.

    its not a very fun thing to watch a man cry for his life when he is being stabbed or beat and it is segrgated for a reason in the prison it's less problems that way i hear you all say this and that unless you have been there and done you dont have the right to even speak on it but i can tell you this it was race motivated for one cant even make a move on a another race inside there with out it turning in to a full fledged riot

    I think correctional officers should carry some sort of weapons. Even just tasers or something along those lines.

    The guy in the video really, has nothing to lose. So he may as well make a name for himself in the prison. It's messed, but that's the way prisons are.

      I used to be one a guard at our county jail. The theory goes - well, there are 100 of them. If I have a gun, or a baton, or pepper spray...well, there are a 100 of them.   • Not much the officers could do...

    ..I am a correctional officer and I know first hand the kind of people in this video. I am around them every day. I can tell you that had one or even two officers gone in to save the victim, they could have easily been overtaken and killed themselves. Correctional officers do not carry any kind of weapons in most states, so we are left to defend with only our hands and any other blunt object we may come across. The only thing that could be done at that point was done, and that was to call for back up and medical and videotape until help arrived. The video tape will surly convict both men of the murder.

      is full of a bunch of anti weapons and human rights....I almost started a job as a correctional officer until I found out the dirty details of the job, you gotta be able to deal with a lot of junk. Prisons should be designed so that there is a protected sharpshooter watching everything that goes on, that man should have been shot before he stabbed the guy once. Who cares if the prisoners can go very many places....keep them all seperate...geesh

      a corrections officer at a large county jail. I agree there is nothing that could be done. In modern prisons the officers are walking in and around the inmates for a large portion of the day ( not in max security though). This is without a weapon. I knew that if they wanted to kill me bad enough to serve a life sentence that they could kill me.

    In 2002 a man stabbed his cellmate to death while guards did nothing. You could hear him crying and screaming. It is policy for them to not risk injury unless many precautions are in place. You cant expect guards to risk their lives. Instead sentence the prisoner to quick death to detur someone from copying them. Alot of prisoners are just trying to do their time.

    but prison violence happens all the time. Most of it is race or gang based. Sad truth, but this crime isn't unique in prison. Frankly, I don't want to see the videos of blacks killing whites, asians killing blacks, latinos killing asians or whites killing blacks. It is all very wrong. However, you must attempt to understand that stupid people exist. In prison, there are few choices, and one of them has become racial.

    Correctional officers are right to not carry weapons, because if one was lost or stolen by the inmates, all hell could break loose, and possibly wind up in many deaths or an overturn of power at the facility.

    Its not a raciest thing per say, it might be but, i dont know a guard who gets paid enough to risk his life for one inmate killing another, if you went to break it up and got sliced or stabbed as a guard, to save a convicted murder or child molester...... um no,who knows maybe the guy got what he deserved.       ...We don't carry guns, if we did and an inmate got a hold of one, it would be chaos. There are guns in the prison for riot situations, and in the towers, but the officers walking around the prisoners do not carry them...

    Many have argued that bonds made in prison are just as strong as hate made there. So, was this a racial attack or some gang related incident? No one deserves to be killed by another, especially so brutally. The thugs in this tape do not seem to mind the cameras.
