Where do you find the small connector block in your house? Do you live in the Radio Shack???

Do you think it's easier to find special pliers with contact ends for LAN cable rather than connector block? That block can be sold in most big stores, and ofcourse in electric shops. But if you don't have one - use any simple connection. Soldering would be even better.

  • I was going to

say, "Watch all these idiots not use soldering and heat shrink tubing". I see too many videos in here using a twist of the wires and covering with electrical tape.
I like this idea if you want to switch back to a regular patch cable.
But then again my trusty RJ-45 crimper never fails me.

  • well...

It should be working, but you lose many of the cable's feature: for example you'll loose signal with that (not that important for small distances) or you'll loose noise protection for those cables (most important ones TX and RX :D).

  • Interesting...

But it would be easier to simply buy a crossover cable; they're available at pretty much any computer supply store, and there's no risk of damaging an already working Cat5 cable. Something you don't address is that any shielding provided by the cable covering is lost, so your method would best be used on an unshielded cable.

Ofcourse can buy that cable in store, but I'm sure everyone has tonns of those LAN cables at home, so just U can spend few minutes to make your own, save time and effort. I never seen sheilded LAN cable. Where would shield be connected to? USB are shielded, but not LAN.

    • No effort saved...

I don't see that most people would have those small connector blocks lying around the house, which would of course then require a trip to the store, thus making this method no more efficient than simply buying a cable. Additionally, I have made a ton of Cat5 cables myself (I own a crimper), and it's always common practice to have a good grip on the top of the cable, just below the part that was stripped off, so that when you untwist the wires, the wires further down the cable don't untwist as well. No effort was made in that regard in this video. Also, when the sleeve was being cut off, the cable was bent many times; the wires inside can be fragile, and bending them is usually not a good idea. I've not seen fire used to strip wires before, but I have to wonder if the extreme heat, though only briefly applied, could adversely affect the wire.

Also, a quick Google search allowed me to find many shielded Cat5 cables, so they are freely available for purchase.

    • I agree

if you are going to go to the trouble of going to a store, better to buy a Cat5 crimper and cable and instruct how to build both cables. In the States one can find those in all Lowes, Home Depots, and of course Radio Shack.

  • .....?

I don't get it.. Why cut a cable then just wire it back together?

  • Good but useless now

Back in the day you would need the crossover to network 2 PC but now you don't have to. Just use a straight cable and the NIC will auto cross it for you.
