  • LOL!

Everyone that thinks this is fake needs to go back to school!! A plane doesn't blow up when It's struck, in a storm they are struck a huge number of times!!!

    • i agree..

if you noticed, the lightning continues through the whole shell, and ending at ground. the air frame/shell is just not accepting any electrical charge. the areo science has been indeed studied to the point where we could actually make body suits to do the same as the airplane.

    • not rly...

they might b hit from time to time but never an huge number of time...

    • Even less

Actually it happens as often as 1 time a year.

    • no its not!

there would be basically no need to evacuate because the air crast isnt grounded, it is only been used as a shortcut to the ground the only thing would be that some of the navigation systeme might fail and they would need to turn around, but the makers of the equipment make the items serge proof.

...The plane must be traveling at exactly 88 miles an hour when the lightning strike! Then we'll send you...!...back to the future!"

  • Faraday's Laws

A charge is always conducted on the outside of planes, cars, etc. If you don't understand that then you need to "stay in school".

    • Correct

The current will follow the path of least resistance, which is through the alumunium alloy casing/frame of the plane. It wouldn't flow into the plane itself, because that has a higher resistance.

i was hit by lightning in a plane from heathrow to glasgow and it made a big bang, the cabin crew had no idea what it was, and yes planes DONT blow up when hit, im a witness to that, scariest flight i hv been on was xmas 2007 70mph winds and on landing the outside of windows went black from the clouds, whats the chances, but it happens quite often, and is suposed to hit the front and travel to back like in this vid, or from one tip of wing to the other going under the plane. I found tht out from a mate that has an air stuadesss as his wife.

  • Elementary physics

Ensure us the "body" of an electric discharge would not pass through a capsule that's metal-shielded, even if it's only partially shielded. In fact, even the metal carcass of the plane has much higher resistivity than air in plasma state so most of the lightning will circumvent the plane, through the near air. However, a residual electric current can and will pass through the inside of the plane. In certain circumstances it can be so strong as to ionize the air inside and actually conduct the discharge, but such a condition is so remote even in laboratory conditions it requires extensive preparation to occur. None the less, the residual current can be strong enough to damage avionics and the air (plasma) on the lightning path is so hot it can melt through anything, so there is a real risk in this situation. That's why after such an incident planes are indeed checked thoroughly.

  • Common

This event, though in probably less dramatic cases, is a common event. Statistically, about 10% of all aircraft experience lightning stikes. The aircraft itself contributes to this, atmospherically. It is something that the design of commercial aircraft must deal with. (Composite or not, as there are no fully composite airframes of this size flying today). Travel safely everyone, thank science and the engineers who understand these things to keep you safe and allow you to travel in such a manner!

  • reason of Lightning Struck

it's simple, high speed vehicals' tires statically charged and discharged due to friction with land but in case of plane discharge is not held properly due to detachment of tires and land, here at this point the tires are positively charged
    because it goes like this
charge1|| charge2 here charge 2 is mother earth itself which is actually greatest capacitor at present,
so lightning = --ve and tire=+ve and earth =ground, that's y it got strucked rather than hiting any tree or a local lightning discharge rod
I am damn sure that all people will be save instead of those who were in direct contect like phone lines which are unlikely to be in the air plane and by Gaussian law that plane would been acted as a space with equipotential surface
    hence no big loss

    • exactly

a plane (being an aluminium shell) would act as a faraday cage, the lighting bolt went from highest point to lowest point, and then to ground, obviously not harming the aricraft, as some people have said, planes are designed to take lightning strkes and not get harmed (the wiring harnesses for planes do not run along the outer shell but in the middle under the flooring... since electrons dont like to take the scenic routes when in a circuit, the outer-most electrically conducting surface and shortest route will take all the current to its destination which is the ground...

Of course this is expected to happen from time to time. Usually it does no damage, although it can damage electronics on board like any power surge.

  • Comerical vs military

it's funny how comerical aircraft and some helicopters can fly in that weather but military fighters can't... I work on the military side these aircraft aren't made to take such a hit... the "new" F-22A sleath technology corroides in the rain... the the aircraft can not, I repeat, can not handle the movement it was designed to do, if you seen videos on it doing manuevers, that same aircraft was grounded after...i've seen a new f-22 fly from the factory to my base, and get grounded after taxing in, and stay grounded for a month... aircraft is not battle ready nor flight ready...piece of S**t

great video, caught a rare event on film from outside the plant. The charge simply passes through the air plane. the plane is not grounded.

the aliminium coating that has a charge of electircity, being able to deflect/asorb any lighting striking it

By Sunshinesmile 1219922715 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • ???

How can it fly after that?

By Nurizelll 1219914394 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • It's simple.

Electricity, in the case of a lightning strike, takes the easiest path to the ground. When a plane is struck the lightning travels through the planes metal structure since it is more conductive than other materals inside the plane itself. The lightning then strikes seperately from the bottom of the plane to the ground.

Thats also why the planes fuel tanks do not explode from a lightning strike. The fuel is less conductive than the metal tank surrounding it so there is never any lightning within the tank, the electricity simply flows through the tank around it.

  • Bonding

With the new composite structure its harder to make an aircraft safe from lightning stike that why they have to chek the bonding of the composite structure...

Yes usualy the aircraft has no major damage following a lightning strike but it is real dangerous... electronic instruments can be damaged, static wick and composite strucure can be destroyed.... the second lighting stike on this aircraft might have damaged it...

after each lightning strike the aircraft must pass a big inspection to make sure its still airworthy

      guyzzz !!!!!!!!!!!!!
charge on a conductor always resides on the surface
      this is pretty basic
moreover making a aeroplane involves taking into consideration each n every risk factor dat might hit the situation

  • Normal.

Planes are struck by lightning practically on a daily basis. I was on a C-9 from Oakland to San Diego once that was hit three times on the starboard wing in less than 20 minutes. The lightning struck the wing and traveled toward the fuselage where the bang scared the window seat occupant into the aisle. No damage. Almost never is.

  • Fools will not digest Wisdom

Yes indeed wisdom is only given to wise and those who fear the lord. This is foolish information given a plane blows up in the air. Will metacafe be discreet in showing what is good enough for the public who uses internet.
