The japanese car tuners JUN and Top Secret tuned up a 350z for Option Magazine, a Japanese tuner mag, specifically to run the Silver Street Classic in Ely, Nevada. The crash was indeed caused by a blown tire and the driver, Daijiro Inada, did survive.

Yes, it was a tire puncture. Right rear, if I remember correctly. The car was specially built for the event and was putting down somewhere around 700hp. But, the driver is a pro, had he gotten on the brakes he would have probably crashed going much faster.

From all looks, that looks like a tire blowout.
Its weird because as he was slowing down after the tire went out, it looked like he had it back under control, because he swayed to the left, and then to the right, before righting the car. And then I guess, most rubber went of the tire, and the car just turned, and he could do nothing about it.
Good to hear that he survived.

If you listen carefully near the end you can hear rocks kicking up from the car and anything bigger than a pebble (or many pebbles) at 250KPH is going to pose a huge problem.....there is no way it would ahve been the gear box

I'm not a pro driver myself, but the grinding sound you hear in the beginning of the crash is probably because the rpm is too high for the existing gear the driver was on. The tire blowout ultimately caused the car to swerve - if you listen carefully, you can hear it blow.

A gear box problem would not have caused the car to spin out of control like that. It would just not be able to go anywhere.

If you hear carefully, he tried to change the gear, and it blocked... then he had neutral and loose control of the vehicle... You always loose control of your vehicle, in neutral and top speed... He managed to get out of there alive..nd that is a miracle... :)

it was a blown tire. He did absolutely the right thing by putting it in neutral to try and allow the car to slow itself as gently as possible. These are professional drivers and know that taping the brake or downshifting is a sure way to lose control of a car that has lost a tire at such speeds.

The first time I went car shopping way back around 1973 or so, I test drove a small imported car that looked more like an MG Midget than anything else. It was a Datsun Fairlady. It was cool to drive, but it had a blown cylinder, so it was only running on three, and would need extensive work on the engine. That's the last time I've ever heard of the 'Fairlady' model. Pretty cool that it's still around.
