Someone had posted earlier that bellydancers are supposed to be heavy set. This is 100% a myth.

Bellydancers aren't supposed to be anything but enthusiastic about their dance. That's it. Traditionally women of any size would bellydance..

And no, it's not a seduction dance. Women didn't come up with the dance millions of years ago to "entice" the pharoah or whatever the heck else "royalty" you can think of.

The most common belief among historians and the like is simply this: Bellydance is a dance of Fertility. All the women of a tribe/group/village would celebrate the puberty (first period) of a young woman.. with the dance. The main and most common moves in the dance, not only create healthy muscles and organs.. but it also aids in the actual giving of birth.

Indian women have been documented as standing up.. doing a bellyroll.. whilst giving birth.

The bellyroll is the first thing you think of when you hear the word "bellydance". A proper bellyroll is done with the internal abdominal muscles, contracting one group at a time but in a smooth rendition.. to create a "ripple" effect.

However, starting in the late 1900's (i believe, i may have that date wrong) the modern world adapted and slightly altered the dance AND costume. The moves turned into a more "spinal" way of moving. Meaning, you move more with your skeleton than with actual muscle contractions.

There are a whole bunch of types of bellydance styles. But the one style that most closely resembles this deep muscle isolation is that of "Tribal Fusion".

This woman in the video does a very beautiful job of "egyptian, labonese, or cabaret" style of bellydance. Which is the more "skeletal" styles.

Not only are the moves more skeletal, but they are softer.. and more delicate. Whereas Tribal Fusion is rigid, isolated, yet at the same time VERY snakey.
