Football isn't the correct name for the game that kicks around a ball with our feet. At least, the people who use the logic "It's called football because you use your FOOT" are wrong. I think this is one of the reasons Americans don't get into soccer (football). Americans are unimpressed by people who get hurt, even in contact games. It's pretty rare to see American athletes lay on the ground unless something in genuinely wrong, and even then there is a saying in sports here, "Don't let them see you hurt." Combine this pathetic attempt at cheating, with the fact that our American mens' soccer teams S**k (our womens' teams do well, but who cares?), and it's no surprise that the wealthiest nation in the world doesn't care about soccer.

oh by the way, football is the real name. You american use it to describe a sport that you dont even use your feet to play the ball. And why the hell do american football use an elliptic ball ? They were out of standard round ball ?
Nobody in America knows how American football got it's name, either. It really doesn't make any sense at all, since you don't use your feet for the core element of the game. The elliptic ball is easier to throw; has better flight characteristics, which brings one back to the question of, "Why are you throwing a ball calleda football?" It's been called football here since the mid-1800's as far as I know, so that's what we call it. Believe me, nobody I know would have used the name football to describe that game.
