As long as they are standing the refs won't interfere. Once they go to the ice they step in and send both players to the penalty box with a slap on the wrist. HOCKEY KICKS ASS....but now they got these pussy rules where you can't fight. I haven't watched it since.791553 - Of Course
Fights are what makes hockey great! For instance the bad Bruins of the 70's. They suck now but they were nasty then because they had a bunch of guys who wouldn't take shit from anybody.

I believe you can fight like that IN CENTER ICE only for legal fights, and the refs step in when a man hits the ground as long as it is clean fighting. it may not be a written rule, but if the guys go to center ice and keep it clean, i have seen the refs let a many a fight go on like this. it is what draws so many fans.... Imagine if NFL players could do this at center field?? *LOL*

because the players outweigh the refs by a lot of muscle-weight and they are angry and throwing wild punches. Refs aren't paid to get broken noses or smashed chiclets. I think that the fighting cheapens ice hockey. This stuff is punished in virtually all other sports, so why not hockey? PS - The jerks who like hockey fights are usually scared poopless at the thought of being in a fight themselves.

You are right about the reason refs don't jump into the middle of a fight. If you think about it, other sports just don't have that element of the possibility of instant death looming over the player's heads. This makes for a very combustible setting on the playing surface that you really can't find in any other sport. Think of it as a modern day coloseum. Fighting is not punished in hockey because of the nature of the sport. There are bound to be fights in ice hockey. You are putting 12 big guys on an ice surface surrounded by boards with weapons in their hands (in the form of a hockey stick) and nothing to protect their face. Hockey players fist fight (most the time) because it is much better than the alternative: killing the player by slashing him in the face with your stick or jumping up and kicking a skate blade into the other player's abdomen. If you look at it this way...fist fighting is actually a very civilized way of settling a dispute during a hockey game! PS I love hockey fights, I've played hockey since I was 5 and I don't think of myself as a jerk, but I love knocking jerks out that have never stepped foot on an ice rink...they go down soooo easy!

There is a clip that shows two goalies go at it. If i remember right it was Dominik Hasek and Patrick Roy in the playoffs, it was an awesome game and fight. The goalies just skated as fast as they could from their goals and just tackled each other. It was great.887047 - rules
fighting is 100% legal in hockey as long as no one interferes, if its only 2 guys, let them kick each other's ass till they hit the ground. but as soon as another person comes in, they brak it up. thats y i love hockey...used to anyways.

Compare this to a soccer fight. The hockey guys actually know how to ball their hand into a fist. The fist is then thrust directly and powerfully into the other guy. Most of these soccer fights with foreigners are comprised of one, maybe too slaps and a badly shaped kick.
If I have to watch a fight during a sport, at least don't make me think "my sister could take these guys" like I do when I watch a soccer fight.

I agree it takes alot of skill to play soccer but Hockey requires just as much if not more speed, skill, inteligence, team work and strategy than soccer does.
