In the USA back before the mid 70's. They would put the gas in, check the air in the tires, clean the glass, check the oil and you would get a free glass or so other free gift. Now we have do do all that and we don't even get a thank you when we pay for the gas.
By no1killer 1222307848 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHere in Brazil most of the gas stations do all that =P

By staur 1221971898 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedoesnt know that this knind of world still exists
By afifisa 1221656408 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI live in the Usa and I live in a small town, only 1 guy that runs his own business still services the car, washs your windows, checks your oil, your tires, and auto transmission and radiator fluids too. But I do miss the good old days, when that used to happen everywhere you filled up. It also did not cost you extra either. I think if you were to do it that way again there would be a lot less gas and go's,you know people fueling up and just leaving.
By dizzylil1 1221647216 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removefor 3 dollars a liter one gets good service, you cheap americans want gas for free and pay attendants minimum wage, so pump your own gas biatch

By lamia911 1221327855 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removetoo bad you are too young to remember what SERVICE stations used to be like in the good ole US of A. I worked in a gas station when i was a teen. We cleaned the windows, checked the tires, checked the oil and water plus pumping the gas for you..then came the first oil embargo, then discounts for do it yourself gas, it all comes with a price, how soon we forget.
By jaxplane2 1221325995 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove..is that for real? :0 I'm kind of ashamed of my country now :( 5 * to them :)

By TheJapanChannel.com 1221181496 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThanks for posting this, Anija.
Many of the business in the service industry in Japan push the "Servicu-servicu" and hospitality. I remember stewardesses on board the Shinkansen pushing carts selling everything from UCC coffee to "Gemtleman's Magazines". A business companion bought one of those for me as a joke called "Weekly Naitai". I couldn't believe it actually had coupons for the prostitutes! I guess those are for the cheap f***er.
Thanks for the 5 and the funny!!!
By TheJapanChannel.com 1221177935 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat's about the same in Brazil, minus the air fresheners ;)
Glad you are all enjoying it!
How about some 5 stars to help it along? :)
This happen in Mexico... states like Michoacan, Coahuila, Some places in Jalisco...
all the smalest cities
most of them are unlicensed street vendors or just plain beggars. I have seen parents put their kids to beg and parents keep the money.
By Jneutron 1221185969 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI sure hope you tipped them nicely. This could never happen in the US because since everyone expects to make a living wage the additional cost would make the gas to expensive.
By DAMANINMIAMI 1221143516 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeno tipping in Japan.. they work like that because they take pride in their work!
By TheJapanChannel.com 1221210492 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveBecause good service like that is rewarded here whether it is customary to tip or not. I assume by your tag that you are Japanese, so lucky for you you have grown accustomed to this kind of service and take it for granted.
By DAMANINMIAMI 1221219740 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveTipping here in Japan is a little degrading. People here do take pride of their work and besides they are well compensated here.
By guytalker 1221900873 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt is actually often considered offensive if people try to tip here.
The thinking is that people do a good job because of pride in their work.. so offering a tip can be a bit insulting.
Just a cultural thing :)
already? When's the last time you filled up?
By Absofsteel 1221153204 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveImagine how much more we would pay if the additional cost of these attendants was passed down to us.
By DAMANINMIAMI 1221168364 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhile I agree that adding a gratuity to already horrifically expensive gas prices would be kind of silly, I think the real reason service as demonstrated in the video doesn't happen in America is because most people just don't give a crap about going the extra mile for their jobs. They do the bare minimum as outlined in their contract, and no more. In their minds, they will be getting paid the same for doing the bare minimum or for doing extra, so why even bother doing the extra if you're not going to get anything out of it?
People are greedy and lazy, it's just how our society is; usually, in cases such as this, it's the greed that facilitates the laziness. I'm sure it would even be hard to find a good Samaritan in the case of an accident or injury any more, as people are A) too apathetic and B) too concerned about lawsuits... but that's a whole different argument.
But that is not how it has always been in the U.S.. I can remember when this kind of service was customary no matter where you went in this country. Unfortunately the world has changed and the demographics of the U.S. has changed for the worse. It is the sense of entitlement that is instilled in everyone in this country whether you were born here or not that has led to this sad state of affairs. The only defense we have to combat this is to patronize those establishments which offer this superior service and to avoid those that do not. The fact is that crappy service comes at a cheaper price and Americans in the most part are willing to make the trade off to save a few bucks.
By DAMANINMIAMI 1221220156 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeif you like what you do and have enough to eat what the point of getting "TIPP" to do what you like? Welcome to Japan
By processor4 1225294212 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveEspecially because at the end .... they pay you for stopping at their service station.
By ELVIS52 1221142546 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethis back in the 70's when I worked at a service station. When a car pulled in you would have to wash window, check air in tires, check oil, check air filter, check all belts and houses, check brake fluid and if the customer asked vaccumn the car.All this for a 5.00 to 10.00 sale of gas.Times have sure changed.
By gspra64 1221141704 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removefarting and scratching their asses. 'F**k you you're lucky we sell you the S**t .'
By Absofsteel 1221153375 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI think many other countries could learn by the level of service offered by the Japanese.
By stepo123 1221132450 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAll gas stations there are full service. Oregon law (maybe some other states too) does not allow self service. The attendants there were nice too. This doesn't just happen in Japan. But I sure like to see this in California though.
By Doug_D 1221134675 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removemore good then the chinese
By jon222 1221118774 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewow thats great service
By 8leaf 1221113417 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveJapanese have the best attitude in the world. Only one mistake in Japanese attitude... the will kill their self when they have big problem. They should have brave spirit to face their life although they have big problem.
By allukmani 1221084891 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethey kill themselves cuz they lost their honor, not becuz of the prob
By bobem 1221112112 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveBecause of the problems! Right? If they have brave heart they should solve the problems first...all people make mistake in their life...don't be shy...the important things is we should learn to reduce our mistake...
By allukmani 1221112710 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removesepuku is not really seen as a way out of problems... it is more about honour and bravery..
it i a bit hard for non-japanese to understand japanese thinking maybe.
I thought its called Harakiri...... or Kamikaze????
By whatever2020 1221107262 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove"hara kiri" means "centre cut" and is when a person cuts out their own insides.
"Kami kaze" means "god wind" and was the name given to the suicide pilots in WW2
Here in Brazil, we have the same service...
every gas stations have about 3 or 4 guys for car...
excuse my poor english
We have better service in Cairo....
By eHABnABIL 1221558364 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyou pay only 0.35 $ per Letre (92 Octain)!
By eHABnABIL 1221558862 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemovePeople don't do that any more. If they did, the cost of gas would be up around $10 a gallon to buy food and clothes for Miguel and his 24 brothers and 39 sisters so that they can pay for their trip to America where they can get all these things for free. Clothes, food, apartment, healthcare, Social Security check, education, ...etc..... Taking jobs and money and other benifits away from the Americans who worked for it, hey, we might come a blow you guys up next.
