the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is the first aircraft designed from the ground up to meet the needs of the Defense Department's four U.S. armed services. The tiltrotor aircraft takes off and lands like a helicopter. Once airborne, its engine nacelles can be rotated to convert the aircraft to a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight.

  • famous for killing test pilots

This peice was ram-rodded through congress for funding even though it was notoriously unsafe.

  • But

Can it fly with one engine? uhhh! I dont thiink so, If it were safe there would have been hundreds of them contracted to someone by now, sure the concept has some potential, but so far its been nothing but a waste of lives and money, money that could be used on research for saving lives mabye?

    • Actually, it can

The two engines are connected through a shaft system, in case there is a failure of one engine the other engine can carry the load.
It means that the aircraft can, at the least, get down safely, if not get out of the area to land in safer surroundings.

  • One big problem

The rotors are huge- it can't land while the rotors are "Horizontal"- like an airplane- it will crash.

What happens if the rotors stuck and can't be put in the "vertical" position?

It is a sure crash, as even if notice it as the pilot you can't do anything about it, as if you try to land in this way you will hit the ground with the rotors.

  • Very Old

The Osprey is as old as the Chinook, just cuz you didnt hear about it doesnt mean it dont exist, dont believe Obama will cut, it would be like the president removing all armed forces from services

  • Amazing aircraft

But what do you call it? It's not a plane and it's not a helicopter. Heliplane?

I think I would be too much of a sissy to fly on one. They had a lot of crashes during development. Then again I guess thats common for experimental aircraft. Maybe they have all the kinks worked out now.

The only thing better than this would be anti-gravity!

    • it's airplane

I think I will still called airplane since it principle like harrier, it's used vtol (very short take off and landing) capability

  • Yep

It's a pretty amazing aircraft, it's not technically a helicopter though.

Now, the bad thing is that if Obama becomes president, the Osprey budget is going to get slashed, or it might get completely canceled.
