Jet Blue emergency landing with a broken front wheel.
I work next to the runway and I saw the whole thing from my company's roof building that was was quite an intense experiance. that pilot get nerves of steel my hat goes to him...
By hammerhead77 1152469928I once saw a documentary about how a passenger airliner lost all hydraulics onboard in mid flight (that includes rudder, pitch, roll, flaps, everything). The only thing they had left was the throttles, one for left engine, one for right.
The pilot and copilot used the left-right throttles to steer and alter the altitude of the plane, they landed safely after an amazing feat.
Don't believe me? Google it or something.
That landing was flawless. I'm so glad that the wheel didn't break off. Truely an amazing pilot *salutes*
By JAH1298 1156199139Look at all the stuff that was filtered! What the hell were they saying? This video is true, so what's with all the "womfg it be fake, k-yuk!"
By GOW_Kratos47710 1155577123but there's no way anyone outside the james bond universe wouldn't be shitting bricks under those circumstances
By panthersfootball 1162402819I saw this on the news when it happened, it was like a year and a half ago. intense moment, I was expecting the landing to go terribly wrong, cos he was stalling the landing till he was very close to run out of fuel, so that if the potentially dangerous landing with the twisted wheel would go wrong, that in that case, there would be no fuel to further jeopardize the airport or the passengers.
hats off to ya mate.
I think the people saying this was fake are just trying to stif up the board a bit and have some fun with the rest. I and several of my co-workers saw this live on TV, and it rebroadcast on every news station in north america that evening.
My hat off to the pilot and co-pilot. True they train for this type of stuff, and a lot of these guys are ex-military and so I believe very well trained overall. But still they handled it just exactly right for the situation - I loved the aerodynamic braking and not dropping the front wheel until probably 30-35% of the speed had been shed. It was also even commented at the time that he dropped it dead center line on the runway, almost the entire length of the landing. True professionals - almost restores your faith in Jet Blue!
You saw it in person next to the runway????
Thats adds a whole new meaning to the video.
This pilot is very good. Pilots train for this kind of thing all the time, thankfully very few get to do it in real life. The main skill here, which shows him to be a cool, calm and skilled pilot, is the braking. As soom as the rear wheels touch down, watch as the pilot applies the wheel brakes. This should force the nose down but he uses the tail stabiliser to hold the nose off the ground whilst he slows the plane down. They call this aerodynamic braking. The voiceover in the video suggested that the pilot was applying reverse thrusters, this was not the case. Reverse thrusters requires all wheels on the ground because the front wheel is forced to support all that extra force.
What I would like to know is how the steerable front wheel became 90 degrees out of alignment in the first place. Was the pilot pulling spins before the plane took off?!
The mis alignment at 90 degs of the nose landing gear was caused after take-off. I'd say that this mechanical fault would have occurred immediately after retracting the nose gear into the wheel well and the pilot would have been alerted to this via the craft's on-board computers. These US pilots relied on skill, training and cool composure. Imagine trying to accomplish a manual task relying on angled mirrors.
By BeneathTheUnderdog 1154715479According to the NTSB prelim the nosegear was damaged during takeoff, presumably after running over debris left on the runway by another aircraft.
By Guynextfloor 1159325580bravo for the pilote
I"m user of Flight simulator 2004 and it's hard to do the pilote have done
I remember seeing this live on the news !! That is one hell of a pilot !!
By Yojeffrey 1152433211had that been a delta jet, you would be seeing the crash on the news.
By rick_3464 1152373340if I am inside that plain i will really call my mum and tell her to pray for me via 1800 mumdad
By chiara_baby 1270111557after the pilot landed the plane.. first passenger to come out was a lady holding her baby.. i think everybody smiled with joy after watching them move out from the plane... I even claped my hands when i saw that.. and the pilot insisted to keep his identity anonymous... brave and humble man... RESPECT!
By crapyfatty 1185770867Post your nicks below just to see how many pilots there actually are on metacafe. You can include the licence you have and what type of type rating you hold along with your location. As you may have gathered I am a CPL Pilot from London

What do the pilot do ? What is excellent with that S**t ? F**king noobs ! Ohh Excellent, my uncle is a pilot, and he wouldn't land like the other gay !
By Cebrii 1166027832Now thats what u can call a great job!!!!Congrats 2 the pilot
By MADCAT13 1155893817The Airbus A320 (As I believe this plane is, or if not whatever the model is) is incapable of dumping fuel, as some news chanels reported it doing. It simply flew for several hours as the fuel onboard was burned off so that a fire woul not break out when they tried to land. The nose gear could not be raised after takeoff from Long Beach airport. They rerouted to LAX due to better emergency equipment.
By oracle989 1155829611The flight had departed from Burbank but they did indeed divert to Long Beach after the flight computer had reported nose gear was stuck at 90 degrees (that's exactly what the computer had reported, I didn't know they could be that accurate). The pilot wanted to get visual confirmation of the problem from JetBlue ground personnel at LGB so he flew over the runway there, then went to land at LAX which is better equipped to handle such emergencies. As you stated the A320 and most airliners of similar size cannot dump fuel, so they flew around for a couple of hours before landing. Must have been long hours for those aboard.
By Guynextfloor 1157689153It is indeed an A320, JetBlue only flies that type. That aircraft is heavily automated, with numerous failure scenarios programmed into its computers, but it requires a skilled crew to know how to use these scenarios to their best advantage. Nose gear failure will cause the computer to keep the nose up after touchdown for as long as speed allows it, but it's up to the pilot to decide when to drop the nose and steer.
By Guynextfloor 1157687482u actually saw it gurd!!! 4 u lol bwess the pilot i bet he was pooin his pants lmao!!
By kellymarie_x 1155343362If you fly an Airbus plane, you are taking an extra risk.Look at the safety stats.
By professor101 1154538372That landing is what those in the biz like to call a "Jet Blue How Do Ya Do."
By artful 1154304509he must be one of the only guys in the world to have pulled a wheelie in a plane.
HATS OFF!
Damn, I've seem more removed comments here than anywhere else. Holy crap, what were those guys sayin'?
By GOW_Kratos47710 1153501177To all those people that say fake at these videos. Next time you are on a flight and things go T**s ups, just say to yourself "It's fake!" And you will be ok.....not!
By Who.Dares.Wins 1152701738as a pilot myself of a light sport aircraft. i can say with vidgelance thoes planes are as tough as their pilots.
By jabbie 1152519670Would ppl please stop saying this stuff is fake. if you dont belive something like that then you must be really closed minded. so shut the F**k up and make usefull comments.
By woodywoodgreaves 1152474637I doubt the NTSB keeps records of fake incidents:
http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20050927X01540
i think this pilot did a very good touch down !!!
im a hobby pilot too and in this situation he did a very well done job !!!
keep it easy !!!
but one more reason why id never fly....i like my feet on the ground
By c.h.r.i.s. 1152465932Great pilot and co-pilot, but you must give credit to the aircraft manufacturer for installing such great landing gear that did not collapse. Engineering such strengh into it. Jus imagine, the tires obviously cant hold much. The wheels are the ones sparking in that fashion and they did not break away nor did they catch on fire.
Great job Airbus, we A
I'd be making a mess about that time!! Great job in landing in one piece!
wooowo that was amazing if it is real. salutes for that piolet.... something somewhere is still missing but........
By NYk in DUBAI 1152378095crossed your fingers, who knows what might have happened..you have SAVED LIVES..thanx mate
By adder_star 1152341354It kept me crossing my fingers, hoping nothing wrong would happen.
By cibercitizen 1152336225I've tried landing a fully functioning plane in Flight Sim and haven't yet got it to a stop on a runway.
Actually I've never got it to a stop on an airport unless I hit a building. I can, however, land safely on water and my aircraft never sinks.
I've also found that I can land on open ground without even lowering my landing gear.
Nonetheless I would like to take my hat off to my colleague for what was exceptional control of his aircraft. To land and stop on a runway is hard enough. To do it with a dodgy wheel is impressive.
Well done.
BUT I WAS SMART ENOUGHT TO PUT UP AND DOWN MY FRONT WHEEL
By whatthefuc 1152935219Any landing you can walk away from was a good landing.
Any landing you can walk away from and use the plane again was a great landing.
How did this all become a gay festival of comments and filtering?? Is it because of the priest on the plane? Just wondering.
