  • This is a poor example of training...

1- The lizard's instincts are already there to catch the moving object, so the keeper is simply luring the bird, which requires very little training.
2- The keeper is then trying to cue the lizard before the lizard has swallowed and is ready to think abou the next request, so he is overusing the cue and therefore dilluting the cue.
3- Training is when the subject is given a choice, and the proper choice is rewarded (positive consequence). This lizard is denied the choice.

This keeper could easily refine his technique by just holding the target still until the lizard makes contact with it, then the food is presented.

  • Pavlov would be proud

I agree,it's conditioning rather than training. My friend works in a zoo and they use a similar technique with large animals like elephants so they can safely check for injuries,do routine health checks.

    • Yes, But whats the difference

You correct by calling this conditioning, but thats what training is. Think about it if your dog is trained to roll over its is conditioned to display that behavior in order to receive its reward whether is be food or praise or whatever. Training reptiles works the same way. You capture a desire behavior, it can be as simple as what you see in this video or as intricate and name recognition in a group of animals. Then you reward that desired behavior. Any animals is trainable to different extents. Reptile training is not well known but it is growing especially in zoos working with large dangerous reptiles like komodos or crocodilians. It make life easier and safer for keepers and the animals.

    • A rose by any other...

We could argue semantics all day,but basically I have to agree with stevewebb on this one that this was perhaps not the best executed example you could have used.
...and I was actually agreeing with the point you make in your last sentence.
