On Tuesday, October 02, 1996, after some heated debate, the Los Angeles City Council voted 8-3 to approve renaming a stretch of “Berendo Street”, which runs in front of the church of Scientology’s landmark building, as “L. Ron Hubbard Way”.
Council members Marvin Braude, Ruth Galanter and Mike Feuer dissented and many residents objected to the name change, saying that the church will abuse the change for its own objectives.
In this video, two residents of L Ron Hubbard Way, who are non-scientologists, explain to the Los Angeles Council how closing the street every weekend (104 days of the year) for scientology-related events has caused havoc to the lives of the many non-scientologists who live there.
In recent months, there has been an increasing movement to reverse the re-naming of the street so that it can be used by residents, pedestrians and motorists as a regular main road.
Many people also believe that L Ron Hubbard was a charlatan and a criminal and doesn’t deserve the honour of having a street named after him.
