“I could tell he was angry that he had hit the board,” Hautau said of the Olympic hopeful. “He was in fourth place after the first dive in the round"

"Ferrucci, who sustained a minor skull fracture and spent one night in the hospital, will have to keep his feet on the ground for the next month, but Hautau expects the promising young athlete to make a strong recovery."

“Greg’s in the upper echelon of divers in the country, and while very few make the Olympics, he certainly has the talent and mental ability to compete at that level.”

  • What's with the treatment?

As a lifeguard, there's always a possibility of a spinal injury when a diver hits their head on the diving board. Yet, in all the cases I've seen where this has happened, the coach has gotten in and not considered this. The kid is lucky to have only fractured his skull.

    • Ok Mr. "Lifeguard",

As an EMT myself and a vaulenteer on my national ambulance service I know this simple little fact that I was tought, you trea the thing that kills first. Meaning, a live boy with a broken spinal cord because of the trauma he may or may not have sustained during the dive OR a dead drowned boy without a broken back. Errr... I pick answer number 1!

    • Actually that "Lifeguard" is right

I too am a lifeguard and I was there at the US Open in Indianapolis when Greg Ferrucci hit his head. And it could have been a lot worse. If someone hits their head like that the rescue should look a lot different. The victims arms should be secured tightly on either side of their head and you should be coming up at an angle...not a directly up while pulling the victim by their chest. I'm just saying, before you guys jump the lifeguards ass maybe you should realize that he's a trained professional. Luckily Greg was okay and was out of the hospital after only one night.

    • where the fuck were you?

as a lifeguard why arent you at diving competitions to keep the coaches from having to get wet. get off metacafe and go train so you can beat the coaches to the rescue.

“I was up fast. I didn’t even wait for a lifeguard. Once I saw him go limp and start sinking, I was in the water,” Hautau said. “ I wasn’t exactly dressed for swimming in my jeans and shoes, so I was afraid my clothes would weigh me down, but I caught him about halfway to the bottom, and we were up in three kicks.”
