How many different martial arts have you studied?

    • Muay Thai > Tekwon Do (ITF, WTF)

I was doing Taekwond-do (ITF) 13 Years long. As I study Muay Thai I see: I could harm with my TKD kicks only retarded opponents. Muay Thai teaches you how to kick. Fact: My low kicks would make you, Hyabya cripple in a minute. With those 360 kicks you are able to hunt leafs.

I've trained in TaeKwonDo for a few years, and like it. Yes, it is an Olympic Sport, but it's a martial art too! I

  • Might I add

to the moot martial art argument..
do not study martial art to "kick someones ass". martial arts are only good for getting in shape. You see, the best offense in the real world is legal offense: you sue someone that beats you up, or even worse, someone sues you for beating them up. This isn't the ancient times when these arts were developed, so get real

    • remember

not to judge WTF and ITF taekwondo in the same light... WTF has become a standardized sport, like kendo, while ITF preserved much of TKD's practical aspects of combat...you can go to youtube and search for ITF/WTF vids and compare the very clear differences.

        • Tae Kwon Do

I've been studing tae kwon do for about 8 years and the way I see it is tae kwon do is a martial art that can help in a street fight but it matters on a couple of facts; your body type your opponets body type, your strength their strength, your speed their speed and it goes on. Now I've been i fights before (mind you im 6'2 200 pounds) where I've used tae kwon do and fights were i haven't used tae kwon do. A correct roundhouse to somebodys exposed ribs is likely to end any fight but not to say they punch you in the face before you can get the opening

          • art... not to use on streets

this is an art...a marcial art. but it's not very effective against other fighting types. In street fights usualy who win is the guy that has some basic moves used in kickboxing, boxing, muay tai, military combat for example. I know this because I practiced karate-do for 6 years and all that I learned was some sensible spots to hit, but not very effective moves. but I gained self control and became fit :)

            • why do people act like they know things.

you say a kickboxer could usually bet someone who does taekwondo, you obviously dont know what you are talking about. taekwondo and korean kickboxing are very simolar and both originate from the same thing. the main difference is the amount each martial art utilises the legs/arms (kickboxers use less kicks but more punches, the opposite for taekwondo). as for you karate-do lessons, you must have a very bad instuctor, if you get a decent instuctor, they will teach you a range of things such as self defence, how to stay within the law, simple ways to win fights, and of course the entire martial art you are studying.
im not trying to say you are stupid or anything, but it would be wise to learn a bit more about the background of martial arts before you comment on them.

my advice to all, if you are going to start a martial art, make sure you choose a good instuctor! i myself am lucky to have one of the best in the world. if anyone lives near Portsmouth in the south of England, i will let you know where the classes are and i will give you the website my email is robyracer392@ hotmail.com (take away the spaces)

            • balance

hey man what i was trying to say is that muay thai and kickboxing are more balanced than taekwondo, they use more fists than taekwondo and thats their main advantage because a kickboxer can easily win a combat against a taekwondo fighter, he simply needs to close the distance and apply some punches. tell me can you kick a guy if he is 5 inches of you? isn't it easier to punch him?

            • we can

any good taekwondo practitioner should be able to kick at very close range, it is done by bringing your knee right up to your chest and kicking out, or by jumping away and kicking at the same time. it can be applyed in nearly all kicks, making it very effective.
we do also use hands, although as you say, muay tai, and kickboxers are generaly better with there hands.
i myself do both taekwondo and korean kickboxing, and it makes you realise how it is down to the person fighting, not there art.
as for balance well i would say we had the edge

is an olympic Sport its not martial art (my opinion)

                • sport/art

Yes, taekwondo sparring is an olympic sport, but that is only one facet of at least 7 facets of taekwondo. You should learn more about an art, and be a little more respectful before criticising it or deciding whether it is a martial art or not. This DVD teaches the mechanics of certain kicks only.

...a play on words. When something turns, it revolves. For instance in "Revolutions per Minute". Notice that for the vast majority of these kicks, some part of him his turning.
