F-111 is a multipurpose tactical fighter bomber capable of supersonic speeds, The two crew members sit side-by-side in a pressurized cockpit module that serves as an emergency escape. Executing a "dump & burn" the dispose of excess fuel.
There are three versions of f-111's in this video
The F-111 ground attack fighter bomber, the F-111B strategic attack bomber, and the F-111e electronic weapons jammer.
the F-111 has no odd bumps on top or the bottom of the aircraft, and no wing spars for loading munitions.
The F-111B has two spars under the wings on which stand off missiles are mounted, these spars will change angle positions when the wings sweep from forward to delta gonfigurations allowing the plane to fly at supersonic speeds with out additional drag caused by weapons loaded under each wing.
the f-111E is for electronics weapons jamming systems and recon photo systems.
The F-111 was designed between the B-52 and the B-1 eras, as a cold war fast attack intruder for attacks against cold war russian defense systems. Had the cold war heated up the f-111 would have been used to go after targets which survived the ICBM and Sub-launched misssle attacks.
Its claim to fame was its ability to change its wing positions in order to allow it to land and take off from highways and small airfields, and yet fly at twice the speed of sound fully armed and loaded.
& my Dad kept you in the air (20+ yrs in TAC aircraft maint.)
By Rancid Dredd 1180900756 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI flew the F-111 for nearly 4 years in the USAF, and nearly all of the comment posted regarding this video are wrong! The F-111 was produced after the F-4 and was intended to be one aircraft that could do all air missions: air combat, nuclear strike and precision interdiction from land bases for the Air Force and from carriers for the Navy. The Air Force ended up using the F-111A, F-111D, F-111E and F-111F. The Navy version, the F-111B was cancelled and the Navy instead got the F-14 Tomcat. While most F-111's were officially considered fighters and were in the TAC, the Tactical Air Command, there were also some produced for SAC, the Strategic Air Command. These were the FB-111, and were distinguised by their longer wingspan, a feature they shared with the F-111C which was an export version used by the Royal Australian Air Force. Some of the F-111A models were converted to EF-111A Electronic Jammer aircraft in the middle to late 1980's. All variants were equiped with Terrain Following Radar, enableing them to fly at altitudes down to 200 ft above the ground at night and in weather. The F-111's became the premier precision/laser guided weapon delivery platform in the late 90's and ended up killing more tanks in the Gulf War than A-10's and delivered many precision guided bombs based on the Infra-red video's shown on the evening news. It was ALWAYS a better aircraft than the hapless B-1 Lancer, and would be a great help nowadays in attempting to drop heavy guided bombs into remote Afghan/Pakistani valleys where Osama is hiding. Note to commenters: Abe Lincoln said it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt. If you don't know what you're talking about, please spare us your speculation.
