I've seen more than one interview with Paul Tibbets the pilot, he was glad to complete his mission successfully. He also said that finishing the war saved thousands of lives, which is true.

I have been through two wars and a minor battle involving some urban attacks. I can tell you I much prefer to be killed by a soldier who is angry at me and hates me. At leas then I had a chance, he had a choice. A bomb that vaporizes me and my unit in less then a second is pretty cheap and evil. If I was defending a city I would not want three years of grunt training to be thrown at an unliving unfeeling metal thing that cannot be resisted or fought. Perhaps you would care to enlighten us as to a more effective solution.
1. Don't develop it at all? Not practical. As has been pointed out by Big Prick, the Germans were already developing it, and were in fact ahead of us for a time. It hardly seems wise to allow them the first, and perhaps only, use of it.
2. Develop it but don't use it? Again, hardly practical. If the enemy has it, but knows you won't use it, you might as well not have it. Not to mention the waste of money involved in developing somethiing you will not use.
3. Use it elsewhere? Where and to what purpose? Additionally, wherever you use it, someone is going to complain that it shouldn't have been used there.
4. Invade Japan directly? It has been estimated that this would have cost over 1 million lives on both sides. Aside from the fact that the purpose of war is to win at a minimum cost to yourself, the Japanese people had been indoctrinated into a belief that the Americans would torture and kill everyone combatant or noncombatant. That is why those history books you mention talk about the Japanese civilians committing mass suicide by jumping from cliffs into the sea when allied troops took Japanese islands.
It is very easy with benefit of hindsight to criticize the actions of others, but unless you can offer a reasonable alternative available at the time you do nothing but demonstrate you own lack of evalluative powers.
P.S. If called upon I am quite proficent in the use of profanity and put down (see some of my other posting) I therefore strongly suggest that you not make the mistake of calling me asshole again unless you have a masochistic streak. Got it?

This video shows what happened. But the reason we did this was just. We had no idea about the radiation affects the would linger long after the bomb. Everyone knows about Pearl Harbor, but what about the other battles, not just the invasion. Japan wanted power and land. Well they came after the U.S. and were defeted in the end. First was the demonstation at Bikini Island, which is no longer there. This was a warning shot. Hiroshima came first on Aug 6, 1945. The Japanese did not surender. Three days later on Aug. 9th Nagasaki got hit. The justification was that 1.4 million allie soldiers would die in a land invasion. To lessen the death toll these two cities were bombed. On Aug 14, 1945 Japan surrendered. Yes inocent lives were taken, but in that war inocent lives were taken on all sides. Pearl Harbor by Japan, Hiroshima by U.S., Berlin by the Soviet Union, not to mention the Jewish death camps, France took their damage. So to be all uppitty about the use of the atom bomb is rediculous. For years no one came forward in protest of these bombs and then we learned of the after math and people began to ask questions. It help to end the greatest war ever. What about the use of mustard gas? It was used during this war. It killed in a way that no human should indure. And the city bombings in Europe took inocent lives as well. It happened, it had an effect on many lives and is history. Japan brought the U.S. into their war and Germany declared war on the U.S. to bring us to their war. Before all of that the U.S. was recoping from a depression. Late to action? No. It was not our war until we were brought into it.

What is often not realised is that the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the culmination of an extensive fire-bombing campaign of Japanese cities that had already resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. The worst of these incendiary attacks was on March 10 1945 against Tokyo which resulted in a "conflagration", a more powerful version of the “firestorm seen during earlier attacks. That night in the space of six hours, 100,000 men women and children died and a million were injured.

As a Brit I have to say that I am very ashamed of acts the government have carried out in my name and I can imagine that historically other people feel the same.
