Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Explosion

  • I personally feel...

Just as sorry for the people in japan as I do for the one's in Pearl Harbor. Both places suffered unneeded deaths and pain. Japan struck 1st. Pearl Harbor didn't deserve that unnoticed hit, but the same applies to both Japan cities. Both hits were a shame.
The US was provoked by Japan though. Although I don't condone 100,000's of people being killed, I think most of the fingers should be pointed at Japan. Their govn't failed them horribly. I wouldn't poke a grizzly bear with a stick and expect my family to blame the bear when I was swiped with a grizzly bear claw.
It's really all a shame for both countries...

    • we all adhere to a law

      and under international law,
Japan's strike on Pearl Harbour was a legitimate military target under the Geneva conventions of war.
America's attack on Pearl Harbour was against civilians and the worst terrorist attack or war crime in the history of humanity.
You must be ignorant of the law and your own conscience to call the two equal.

Again, I am from Oahu (Pearl Harbor) and the attack was within the international law guidelines right out of the book. In order for a war politics already agreed based on what each country deemed as a threat or violation of some type. during this time the pacific was open house to whom ever wanted to take over to rule what the U.N. /Geneva convention considered non soverien (country to intself), if you want more go look it up. During 1940 the U.S. forced a take over of the Hawaiian islands to secure the harbor before the Japanese do. the take over forced Hawaii to become a state of U.S. which is internationally illegal but the U.N. desregards the case today that due to the circumstance Hawaii is technically not a true state of the U.S. and will not accept the case.

From the research I found that before pearl harbour the U.S was aggrivatin japan on a number of levels trying to force Japan to attack them thus dragging them into the war. Even before pearl harbor they have documented proof of the president getting word that the japan kamikazee fighters were heading for pearl harbor and the president ordered the military not to stop them from attacking...

There's more to pearl harbour than you think. Not to mention 1 country attacking another countries "NAVAL BASE" is not even on the same platform as nuking hundreds of thousands of innocent people intentinally and directly.

Dont try to justify what America did because it is unjustifiable. They did not even make an attempt to fight Japan they simply massacred their "CIVILIAN" population.

    • As a matter of fact

the japenese plundered, enslaved, robbed, raped, and killed 10s of millions of innocent civillians. The U.S. dropped flyers over both cities before the bombings warning them to leave, thier government woulden't let them. The choice came down to an invasion of the Japanese homeland which would have cost both the Japanese and americans MILLIONS of additional casulties both military and civilian or dropping A bombs on war industrial centers. The Nazis were working on the A bomb too perhaps you would have perfered they developed it first. Before spouting your ignorant Anti-American garbage pick up a history book. Don't forget that the distruction of those cities and the horor it showed has prevented atomic weapons from being used in war again. The developer diden't understand percisely what they had and most invloved felt great shame for the rest of their lives. This research you did didn't happen to mention their were no kamakazies at pearl harbor they dident come about till early 1944 your right there is more to the attack but i dont think you researched anything.

It is told that the japanise military log book registers a attack by the US navy in the pacific ocean killing hundreds of soilders who went in four nuclear submarines to attack the german force. The US navy attacked the japanise subs thinking that they are going to attack the USA soil. The sad thing is that when the US navy communicated the japanise subs they contacted in english while no one in the sub could understand english. there stated the war between japan and US. and perl harbour was a result of that. ' why would no one think that why would someone want to wake up the sleeping gaint. that too with such pain.and effort.

  • IDIOTS!!!

first of all, pearl harbor was an american MILLITARY base, and in a war time situation, the enemy does often strike special logistics advantage points of the enemy (ie USA- Peral Harbor). But america striking a civillian town the size of Hiroshima was totally against the ethics of warfare. but, i guess, this is the typical USA, strike your enemy with brutal force on the slightest provocation, and in the end inflicting more damage all in the name of "National Security". LOL

    • What happened in Vietnam

was a US police action to stop the Viet Cong.
Of the innocent people who died in Vietnam, the vast majority were killed by the Viet Cong, the rest killed by the south vietnamese or USA were largely the result of bombing missions gone wrong due to bad intel or deliberate deception by the enemy.
As to US soldiers who committed atrocities there, I do not pardon them - I spit on them as the thoughtless idiots who gave the rest of our guys a bad name.
However, they were exceptions to the rule - most of the soldiers over there fought and died to keep another country free, only to have it all thrown away by a series of dingbats in the White House who cared more aboout looking good in the polls than winning the war.

But if we started nuking people, we ourselves would be nuked, and it would be an all out nuke war. No survivors. Well, maybe very few survivors, but then a nuke winter would happen. For years the earth's temperature would be below freezing. Also, a lot of people would freeze. Many of the few survivors would starve to death, unless tons and tons of canned food was stored a mile or two underground.
I wonder what the earth's atmosphere would be like. Big freaking hole in the ozone layer. I also wonder if all of the oxygen would be burned up from all of the blasts. The uninhabitable planet all over again.
What do you think would happen if we used our nuclear weapons?

ok, so what is in the past is in the past and I'm sure we all agree that those were desperate times. There are lots of sides to the equation, especially that Pearl Harbour was a military base and the 2 sites of the nuclear bombs were indiscriminatory targets with innocent civilians but yes, it did stop the war and yes those Japanese soldiers raped hundreds of thousands of women and tortured and killed many men when they went through Asia (for the most part, the allied forces just shot the enemy soldiers, or hanged them or they went to trial) and yes, you can can still see the crater in google earth today but I think it was the right choice at the time. Let's learn from the past, forget the hatred and be friends.

  • Horrific!!!

We ought to weep for humanity, and not spend time justifying and vilifying ourselves. Let us who were borne several years after this horror take time to study this reenactment of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and not wish upon our worst enemy. Let the intellectual among us not try to explain this miasma of misguided decisions that emanate from the confused policy makers. When civilized man takes the path of war, that act speaks of failure of evolutional responses and a relapse to primitive and instinctual passions.

By Austeno 1224166145 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • my opinion

First of all, of course it was a horrible thing that the US did. No one in their right minds would be able to make the decision to massacre hundred of thousands of civilians without losing sleep over it.
However, consider what we knew at the time. In the battles of Iwo Jima, Okinawa, the Phillipines (the list goes on), the Japanese had fought to the death. Many were afraid that Japan would never surrender, and that an invasion (Operation Downfall) would be too costly for both sides. Even after the first 2 bombs were dropped, Truman ordered others to be prepared, unsure that Japan would surrender even after this. Plus the war had been going on for six years, with tens of millions of casualties.
I think one of the reasons the US is so active today in limiting nuclear weapons, is partly due to guilt that we were the only ones to have ever used them. We should try to reduce the number of nukes in our stocks, but only when other's do it with us, and after we get better missle defense technology.
    Sorry for the long post.

  • War

There has been a lot of blather here about the “morality” both for, and against, Americans actions in the fateful decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is an utterly flawed viewpoint which can only be maintained by an individual who has no grasp of reality. War, by definition, amounts to no more than the state-sanctioned murder of individuals of an opposing “force”. Predominately, it consists of, is the young who fight, and ultimately risk death, for the (oft-failed) policies of the old. Since the murder of another human being in and of itself is almost universally outlawed in nearly every country, how can you defend war as being a moral enterprise? Or for that matter, quantify actions taken in it as “moral” or “immoral”? However, throughout history, the various factions holding power have passed laws, signed treaties, and held conventions in attempt to introduce “morality” to warfare. From the attempted ban on Crossbows in the 12th century, to the Geneva Convention, and even the “Mine Banning” Ottawa Treaty have all been put in place to theoretically add a presumption of “morality” to war. The only truly “moral” thing for those in power to do is to utterly ban warfare as a means of effecting political policy. However, no faction, even under the most extreme duress would presume to remove this as a means of effecting change. In the end, morality in war equates to nothing more to which side you happen to be on. So this issue I hopefully have removed from the equation.

Now, as for whether dropping the atomic weapons on Hiroshima or Nagasaki being the proper course of action? I advise anyone considering this topic to read through the battle summaries of the Pacific campaigns as well as the proposed Operation Downfall. The estimated loss of life was estimated to be several million combined. The Japanese military machine, while having suffered considerable losses in prior battles, still remained an utterly devoted force. This combined with a society that was still in full support of the war would have meant an American invasion of mainland Japan would have met with catastrophic results even with the scheduled re-deployment of the forces in the European Theatre of Operations. All loss of life is regrettable, but the key to war isn’t killing people, it’s breaking the opponents will to fight. This ultimately was seen to fruition by everyone involved in the Manhattan Project.

Every society needs brave men and women willing to perform acts of absolute violence in the name of a cause to remain viable. To remove that, their society loses the ability to protect themselves against those that are not so inclined.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserab

Mr. goat sucker, maybe we should learn how messed up the nukes are. There should be nuclear missiles only to be used to protect the earth from alleged invaders from outer space, and other things that might threaten earth.
There has been enough tragedy for all mankind. No one wants to see their sons and daughters die in war.

    • First and Foremost...

I forgive you for your childlike innocence and naivety. Of course no one wants their sons and daughters to die in wars. But there are bad people out there who are more then willing to take the lives of our sons and daughters without caring a whit for what you "want". Grow up, and take off your rose colored glasses.

    • actually I am not naive

and am grown up. I see what you are saying, but I am only dreaming idealistically what things would be like in a more perfect world.
Not blowing up the world with the nuclear missiles we have I would want to happen. We have enough firepower to completely vaporize the planet 47 times. I happen to have served in the military, the necessary evil, and know there is not a viable solution for world peace.
There will always be an asshole wanting to start trouble or bomb a country arbitrarily. In my time I have seen some ugly stuff, and only HOPE someday mankind evolves into peaceful creatures. Start with the man in the mirror...maybe others will follow the example.

Oh! That is why America wants to colonized Mars so that someday if majority of nations do not trust anymore the ideologies of the Americans, they will just fired up or vaporized the earth and Americans will just simply escape to Mars as their new home of refuge? Hmmmm.... Bad American interest.

    • Its a nice dream....

but unrealistic. You want peace? Then the only way to guarantee it is to convince all your potential enemies that the price for attacking you will be utter, absolute annihilation.

      Consider the following:
Pretend for a moment that the official policy of the United States of America with regard to acts of terrorism perpetrated upon her citizens was to obliterate every single living relative of the attacker up to 4 times removed. Essentially, the entire branch of the attackers family tree was eliminated. Do you honestly believe we would be the victims of terror?

Before you recoil in horror at this thought, know this: This was, in effect, the official policy of the ancient Romans towards the Middle East. Read about the Emperor Tiberius.

By elChuppacabra 1223788832 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • true unrealistic

and for sure sure no one would agree ultimately. Wanting peace is probably futile. Or maybe the people would agree, and then turn around and arm more nukes, and then blast the blazes out of the US. Really, though, utter vaporization would be the outcome if there were ever a nuclear war. No one would win.

The whole, entire planet, (forgive my being redundant) would lose.
BTW, "The Roman Emperors" is a good read.

I guess war will always be around until mankind destroys earth with the weapons we have that are powerful enough to blow it up 47 times.

Blame Emperor Hirhito. He was told that we had a weapon capable of massive destruction. He was told that if he did not surrender, we would use that weapon against Japan. Hirohito basically said that he didn't believe us, so we dropped it on Hiroshima. We then told him that we had another bomb and that Japan had better surrender or we would drop it as well. Hirohito didn't believe we had another and refused. Boom, we bombed Nagasaki. About this time, Hirohito got the message and surrendered. Furthermore, the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were warned well in advance that their cities would be targeted. But, the good Ol' Japanese propagandists told them that we were just bluffing and they need not fear us. BZZZZZT, wrong answer!

We (the USA) have a bad habit of meddling in the affairs of other countries. And when when those countries get pissed at us for sticking our nose into things, they "bite back".

So really, its our own fault, and I totally agree that the US Government is a bunch of butchers.

It's sad that after all the wars we've been through, we still haven't learned to stop sticking our noses where it don't belong. Let other countries deal with their own problems. We have enough problems of our own to deal with!!!!!

Nevertheless, except for Israel, nobody outside the United States will ever believe us. Ever since 1776 we have just made a single friend... All the rest is silently waiting for our end, which will not come through foreign aggression: we are doomed to poverty.

By the time the bombs were dropped, the war was almost over. So, does that mean the last soldier to die, died for nothing? I think that as long as there are wars, everybody loses. At least where the US is concerned. We came, rebuilt the economy, and left them to their own devices. The killing of innocent people has been around for however long we have been on earth. We pre-empted the loss of more men by killing our enemy. Just ask the people of London England what they thought of Hitlers Whermacht.
