Wilderness Survival Quiz - ID This Nut

  • Carya tomentosa Mockernut Hickory

At least that's the closest I could ID it without a good shot of the entire leaf. I saw a few leaves in the shot but without confirming which tree it came from and whether it was a leaflet or whole leaf I had to discount it. It could be a hickory hybrid or any close relative really. The Bark description and nut picture pointed me towards the mockernut. But if it is mockernut the nut should be really small inside the shell. The kernel is sweet and packed full of energy. It is very edible, but better than that a great place to ambush and set traps for squirrels, duck, white tailed deer, black bear, fox, beaver, turkey, quail, just about everyone in the forest loves to eat hickory nuts.
