A common mistake a person will make is to allow someone to get too close to them. In this video, I noticed the guards making several mistakes. However, security guards get very little training.

I had an incident in the parking lot of Blockbuster, just past midnight, not too long ago. I was about half way between my car and Blockbusters and this shady looking guy came out of nowhere and asked me for money. In my opinion, he looked dangerous (he wasn’t thin or fragile looking like most street people) so I wouldn’t allow him to get any closer by moving toward Blockbusters (he was between me and my car). One of the personal safety procedures is to always retreat or get something between you and the actor. So, as I was walking backwards toward Blockbusters and facing him, I reached into my fanny pack and griped my handgun and told him in to keep a distance from me or I will draw my weapon. I assumed he understood since he quickly took off. End of threat.

Sometimes yelling is enough, and walking backwards isnt a good move, because show that you are scared and maybe you can fall

1) Do you have a license to carry? I do.
2) Have you had any professional tactical gun-carry training? I have.
3) How many classes have you had in gun safety, self defense, personal protection, handgun accuracy shooting, to name a few. I’ve had courses by professionals in all these areas and then some.
4) Have you heard of Thunder Ranch? When it was in Texas (has now moved to Oregon) I went though two three-day classes, firing over 1500 rounds in each of the two classes.

By the way, Thunder Ranch has “simulated” situations in (1) cars (road rage shoot outs and car jacking), towns (you walk through and are attacked) , houses (various personal protection scenarios such as a family member being taken hostage) and lots and lots of target practice.

Based on your comments, I doubt you’ve had any classes. And, now to your comments.

You suggested shouting. Are you serious? Did you learn that in kindergarten? Shouting can get you killed. What if I had shouted and he happened to have a gun? Had that been the case, there would have been a fairly-high probability that he would have been startled and not run away but pull his gun and shoot me. No, you know nothing about personal protection because you don’t understand the risk factors and basic reactions/actions associated with people that may be desperate.

By the way, shouting is recommended in some situations. For example, shouting is good for a woman to do in a parking lot when some man grabs her with the intent to harm her.

I suppose I live in a fairly affluent place, although that statement is relevant to one’s pocketbook (net worth). The average cost of housing here is around $500 per foot, so you decide.

To your question:
1) It was past midnight.
2) Affluent areas attract pan-handlers and muggers/robbers and, although the police are seen often, they can’t be everywhere at the same time; therefore, it comes down to percentages, odds, and risk taking.
3) It’s good practice to get into a habit to always “carry” – this may not make sense to you and explaining it would take too much time. I’m sure others that “carry” will understand.

As I understand it gang structure is a military sturcture. A Group of peopple who would stand up for each other and also work together to a common goal and possible die for each other. Not a bad thing if the purpose of the unit had some goal. What were these guys trying to destroy.. Two guys in uniforms? And in public too, not in some back alley. This was a planned attack.
What mentaltiy drove them to attack two security guards. Ive seen gangs of youth attack monuments, trash cans ect ect.

It's been a long time since my college days. However, having had courses in psychology and sociology, I believe I remember enough to say that the structure of a gang isn’t of a military nature.

The psychological profile of a “gang” such as the one in this clip is more of a “herd mentality” and is organizationally structured similar to the hierarchy of wild animals (in fact, very similar to the hierarchy of baboons). It has nothing to do with a “military” structure” although, I’m sure many gang members would like to think of themselves as a “military” type figure. The reality is that gangs usually are made up of social-economic misfits that group together to feel important and powerful. Also, some gangs have to organize to form a territorial protection barrier against other gangs.

Typically (but not always), gang members are arrogant, belligerent, threatening and dangerous. Bravery is usually not one of their stronger traits, although they pretend to be brave whenever they are together as a group.

As to standing up for each other, they don’t (although there are exceptions). It only appears like that because collectively (as a gang of many) they have a common purpose. The reality is that gangs, individually are usually cowards but collectively are a force to be reckoned with.

As far as them working together to a common goal. Typically, their “common goal” consists of crimes such as burglary, assault, rape, and murder. I’ve never heard of a “gang” with a goal to serve the good of the general public.

Die for each other. No way. If a gang without guns threaten someone and that someone pulls a gun. You will see every gang member break the record for the 100 meter sprint. Not one gang member would be willing to take a bullet for one of his “buddies.”

You’re right, it’s unusual and scary (a beginning of a trend, maybe?) to see a gang go to a public place like a shopping mall, where you have lots of people, security video cams, and security guards and beat someone (or two, as in the video) up.

You’re right, it appeared to be a planned attack. This seems very apparent if you watch the way the gang walked purposely up to the two security guard and ran away when confronted with the third one who may even have know the gang members (but I just speculating here).

I might however debate your assertion that gangs are military in structure. That would be like saying a Yugo and a Maserati are both cars. While technically the statement is true to join them in category is almost insulting. Please don't take offense at my use of the word. Gangs are purely for illegal wanton destruction while military is the representative of any nation when it feels force is nessesary.

I agree that the term “Military Structure” should only be used in its most LIGHTEST sense. My study of gangs is basically Limited to the study of the Hells Angles. An old school buddy of mine became a “Striker” for the Hells angles, and due to the crap he did to join the club ( Arson, Murder, beatings)and the effects of the booze and drugs, hit quite a bottom I wanted to understand this so I did some research. Gangs are all social in nature, even thou being anti social is part of the gang structure. Respect and power or status is craved . In a gang there is an opportunity to achieve quick status. Respect is gained by acts of physical violence, since the gang members often lack academic skills. Biker Gangs are Highly organized groups, and are not easy to get into, most times there is a higher code of honor ( and possibly more military in structure). In this video I see more just kids. Kids don’t feel like the fit into the mainstream and possibly don’t feel wanted, find a home in a gang. Peer pressure might get them to join, Fear might keep them from leaving. Its good to understand these things cuz these gang members are our neighbors and most likely Suffering. How to help.. ?? I don’t know. it seems they are more prevalent now. I agree, the gang merely continues in prison or some young person who is in jail for some other offence becomes part of a gang IN prison. Sounds like a viciouse circle. Very sorry about your friend. Your researching his situation shows you were/are a good friend to him. Anyway, I think the gang situation today is representative of the human condition. Too much apathy. The only thing I can do is protect myself and my family and help where I can. I have tried to help young men in trouble for 15 years. I have yet to fully succeed with one. And, thank you.

I guess one more reply here wont hurt. But my experience with helping people started 12 years ago when the gal I loved told me I had a problem with booze. I went to AA. I found out I didn’t have a problem with booze. She did.. I’m serious. She had a problem with just about everything every one else did. She didn’t like the way you talked , the way you dressed or the way you looked at things. I decided to help. I had no luck at all. This is because she did not want help., she didn’t need help and further she was ok the world was fucked up. I had to ask myself “ what am I doing hanging round with a person like this.. (( big knockers I bet was part of my problem, I mistook “ In Heat’ for “in love”)). I stayed in the 12 step programs because I liked the idea of self inventory and self discovery and I liked the fellowship. In a way I had joined a group of people who wanted to improve things and not hurt others.. Cool. In the years I have seen many people come thru the doors. Some totally beat some just had a few scratches. Not least of was my old school buddy. Its amazing how 2cc of dope in the vein and a bottle of vodka can help a person beat the crap out of someone else and the abuser will never feel a thing. Till the dope beats the crap out of him and he goes looking for help. Once the dope wears off thou reality hits hard and some realize what they have done. Making amends is hard for these people and coming clean is also hard.. I don’t go looking for people to help, but I help run a meeting every Friday night where any one off the street can come and sit and listen to the stories. We don’t judge, we don’t rat on you, we just want to help. We wont baby sit them either or give them money or any of the other things they think they need.. We just offer our experience , strength and hope.

YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST A LEVEL 2 HOLSTER WHEN YOU CARRY IN THE OPEN. THIS HAS TWO "BREAKS" THAT HAVE TO BE GONE THROUGH BEFORE THE GUN WILL RELEASE.

Obviously these two gaurds were ill-equipped for the situation. I wonder if they had previously disciplined one of the gang members and kicked them out of the mall. Then the gang decided to retaliate.

Irregardless the whole bunch should be charged and jailed for a while. Kudos to the lady who came to aid. At least the gang didn't beat her up too.

After working in industries as a social service representative aka commercial staffing recruiter, I know there are bad apples in every bunch, but more and more I see the filth and disregard of the people with darker skin (the fact that people like this are allowed to reproduce, shocks the hell out of me. Just go the local Wal-mart and see for yourselves. I would pay to see thier balls cut off. Not only would it be funny, but it would help solve the problem.
