      Yes it is safe to do provided you are careful.

      Binding your feet to the swing seat is a good start and a good grip comes second best. It is also clear that the ropes of the swing were actually poles which prevented collapse when at the top of the arc.

      So this swing was carefully designed for what you just saw where nearly anyone with enough nerve can do it.
