    Well I guess someone had to make sure a guide for the less technical but I had no problems installing a dimmer switch in my bedroom when I was a teenager with no guides and only exploration.

    Turning off the main circuit breaker is of course a must do for all except the dumb. Testing that the light no longer works is a good enough sign that no wires inside will be live. Still, no harm beyond your time in making completely sure but you still have to form a circuit.

    Mine was an easier job to do when the dimmer switch was a complete replacement with all the same connections.

    Strangely enough I am considering reversion the process by swapping the dimmer switch for a regular switch for one main reason... dimmer switches cannot use low energy lightbulbs.

    Always a place for a dimmer switch in the home though for mood lighting but then you can also fit some soft wall lighting too... which can use low energy bulbs.
