Another vintage style video using a sepia tone with an old film quality editing. This piece is what everyone kept asking Rachmaninoff to play back in the day and he got pretty sick of it because he had to play it all the time. I'm not sick of it though, I love this piece, I have a very very different interpretation of it because it tells a different story to me, so here it is!

  • The performance is great...

...and the video's nice too, although I don't really have the expertise to comment on the editing choices.

The sound's a problem again, though. The base signal seems significantly clearer, but there are two other issues.

First, there's something in the processing chain (might be the camera's ALC circuit) that's compressing the ever-lovin' snot out of the performance. It's eating all your dynamics, the pumping and breathing is distracting, and some of the short notes in the quick passages are being swallowed. Figure out what's doing that to you and squash it. (My recommendation is to record the sound separately--possibly with a computer having a couple of microphones hooked into its sound card--and synchronize it with the video later.)

Also, I think the audio's being compressed a little hard. If you listen closely (which is what one does with a classical performance), you can hear the swishy artifacts characteristic of lossy MPEG compression. It's not terribly pronounced, especially compared to the compression, but it is a bit distracting. If your software allows you a parameter with which to control the degree to which the audio is compressed, I recommend that you choose a compression ratio one-third to one-half lower than what you're using now.

(Most of this doesn't matter for most of the videos on this site, because their emphasis is video, not audio; but in a video like this, audio quality is much more important than video quality. To me, anyway.)
