Scarify a Road Surface

If you watch the video you will see a log or tree jam on the right. The culvert pipe did not rust out, it became clogged. The open end of it has to be free of debris or any thing that stops the water flow thru it. You should notice the water ran over the roadway due to the clog. The dirt and gravel will give way over time and the water back-up was wide which really exerts a lot of pressure. once the water pushed enough gravel away from the buried pipe, the pavement (asphalt) started to lift and loosen more gravel, then enough gravel was washed away and the asphalt with it and the culvert pipe popped up twisted and you could see it was bent on the end. The gravel is loosened, the dirt under it goes and more asphalt crumbles and it repeats the cycle. Highway crews try to keep the head-walls and culverts clear, but nature rules as you just saw. Hope this explains things, I used to pave highways and install these culvert pipes. When the ground drys out there will be a lot of compacting and filling work to do and maybe 2 pipes or even a larger one re-installed.

It's amazing how a neglected culvert pipe can do so much damage. The water didn't have anywhere to go except around the pipe until it had erroded away the dirt to the point there was nothing left to hold the asphalt road up.

A few years ago the southern highway caved in, it got dark and cars kept falling into a a 100-foot ditch despite the warnings of survivors that waved them to stop. The many drivers that got killed that night thought those who were waving wanted to assault them, so they stepped on the gas pedal...

i am thinking was made in phils... our leaders are corrupt... the cost might be 3 million they will make it 7 million pesos but the quality of road is not that good....

This is not scarification of a road surface. This is undermining of a road bed. It was due to a clogged or undersized culvert. As a result, water accumulated near the culvert opening faster than it could be moved through it. The hydraulic pressure eroded the road bed beneath the pavement lifts. The pavement collapsed into the trench, and the culvert floated to the surface.

that is sooo nuts. i thought it was a bridge at first then i realized it was a road and the mud that supported the tarmac was just flowing away then road collapsed. 5 stars

crap. Looks like the pipe rusted out, and then the water washed out the ground underneath. The thing just collapsed on itself. Too bad for traffic lol.
