why do United States people call themselves "Americans" :| thats kinda stupid if u think about it, u people do everything u can, and turn it stupid, America is a continent! u live in freakin United States OF AMERICA.

The continent is called "North America." There's another one called "South America." The continents are named for Amerigo Vespucci. So actually, there's TWO continents and a dead European that we're jacking for our name.

Here's your civics lesson, while we're at it: The country is called The United States of America. Look at a map. There's a lot of boxy looking things we like to call "states." These self-regulating states are united by a common government as well. That's where we get the "United" part. Just for kicks and giggles, try blowing something up in one of them. Then watch the other 49 send large men with big guns to stomp a mudhole in your ass. That's how we define "united."

As for the "United States of America" all mashed together, it works like this. Let's say you are the Mayor of your village. Let's say the name of the village is, oh, I don't know... Idiotville. That would make you "The Mayor OF Idiotville." Your name isn't Idiotville. Its just where you're from.

See, the United States is who we are. America is where we're from. Make a note of it.

North America and South America two different continents?? you are an ignorant, there is only one, which is America.There are only 6 continents: America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania and Antartica.
And when you say you are American isn't exact enough because Brazil, Argentina, Canada, Mexico... are America too. So people from Uruguay can say they are Americans, but you and them aren't from the same country, and you don't make that difference. Is like I say that I am European, it is not false, but when someone asks me, the correct answer would be that I am Spanish, beacuse I'm not french, german...
OK, so if all the world would act like you, a Chinese is Asian, a Japanese is Asian, Egipcians are Africans, Moroccan are Africans, Italians are European and I am European. What you say isn't wrong, but when you speak to someone who lives near your town I don't think that you say "I'm American" beacuse isn't exact. when you speak with someone near your state, you say you are from California for example, not "I'm American", so when you speak to someone in your continent don't say you are American, bease the other person will be American too. And speaking internationally nobody in the world says I'm european, I'm asian, i'm african... only you do "Americans".

By the way: Mexico's real name is United Mexican States, so they are a united states of america too, so they can call themself United Statesian, but the people from there aren't like you.

We tried calling ourselves South Americans and the Brazilians got pissed. We tried calling ourselves North Americans and the Canadians got pissed. We decided it was best to call ourselves Americans and just piss everyone off... seems to be working.

While I am a United Statesian, I feel for your soul young one. I long to learn of the day when you realize that the wasted energy you are directing towards others could have been used to build confidence in your own Identity or used in a more positive way.
