It's kind of hard to imagine this behemoth doing an open deck landing on a Carrier.

  • If my memory serves me correctly.

This Herc was carrying a group of refugees on it and anywhere that it could have landed on an air base would have caused major political issues so the decision was made to have it land on a carrier that was near by. For this approach the carrier was turned into the wind and her speed was increased so that the ground speed of the herc would be as low as possible when it touched down onto the deck. Also, the turbo prop design of the herc's engines allow the prop blades to be turned around in flight so that they push air forward further slowing the plane down. So when the wheels touched down the pilot put the herc in full beta throttle and hit the brakes hard. One hell of a pilot if oyu ask me.

    • No, This was

A navy flight test program, the Navy barrowed the herc from the Marine corps. to see if it would be practical for Carrier resupply. they found the herc could land & takeoff with out tailhook/catapult, buy that the clearence between the island & the right wing was only 2 feet. so decided it would be impractical for fleet pilots in bad weather. Later A smaller twin engine aircraft was developed for resupply, it looked like a mini herc it is called the C-2, A version with a smaller fuselage, using the same wings, tail, & engine serves as an airborne early warning radar plane Known as the E-2 Hawkeye.

    • This wasn't the inspiration for the C-2A

The C-2A design was fairly near completion by the time the first C-130 landings occurred (30 Oct 1963). The first two C-2A prototypes were completed and flown in 1964. Production began in 1965, and delivery to the fleet was in 1966.

  • Nice Vid.

Because of the C-130 unbelievably low stall speed they are widely used for short field supply drops throughout the world. I've actually seen on set down in just under 100 yds. Yeah it's hard to imagine one landing on a carrier but what's even more amazing is it does it without arresting gear.

    It's a joke , not a record !

    It's also a nice video !

    • Yes it possible

This was a test (if you see no more airplanes were on the deck). Since it is difficult and dangerours. No more tests were done
