By 1131962515 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removein fact, almost ALL commercials in the 30s weren't shown on TV due to the fact that TVs didn't EXIST yet.
dork
Cigarette ads were banned as of midnight, January 1, 1971 - not the 1930's!

There are a few more and as time permits, I'll post them. Fact is that the ciggy companies didn't need TV to push the product. Most parents puffed away while the kids were there.

By pumaoase 1115177520 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat RJ Reynolds paid them a lot of money to push their product.Ostensibly on adults since the Flintstones was an adult cartoon that aired after 7pm when most kids were already in bed asleep(those WERE the good old days!)But as we all know, smoking kills it's consumers,so they HAD to lure in fresh young NEW customers and using a cartoon character was a great way to do so.
More recently they tried to pull the same thing with the Joe Camel character and ended up having all marketing with cartoons totally banned by Uncle Sam.
Now they seem to be focusing on opening up markets in 3rd world countries with laxer health standards and regulations.
It's sad but true
