But it was only luck (no carriers at or near Pearl) that prevented 7 dec being more effective. Jap Plan was go for broke, grab loads of resources quick then dig in and defend until Axis ready follow through on Eastern seaboard. US ready for counter punch far too quickly and effectively for strategy to work. With massive home production unaffected by bombing, plus allied retention of control over oil and enough raw materials, US produced their way to vistory.

In fact they didn;t have any money to spend - they forged £ sterling, bought war supplies with it through Italy and S America, effectively having GB pay for much of Nazi war effort. After war, GB then (Finally) borrowed a couple of billion £ from the US (then some more again) and paid it back over the following 60 odd years. we know what happened to Germany and Japan economically after WWII - not just down to their enthusiasm to work - they were seriously subsidized, over and under the table.

Do you reckon the "ass whoopin" would have been serious if the fight was on equal terms? The German Army was a serious professional resourceful and efficient machine. The biggest threat the US posed was that they were so undisciplined and out of control that it was hard for German planners to predict what might happen on the battlefield - regardless of orders.
