Let an empty container run over your car and see if its light. The box of the container it very light but the frame is made of very heavy steel I-beams. Those containers weigh several tons. But one does make a good point. The fact that the train didn't derail is what saved lives. It probably didn't derail because the Tractor trailer was not moving and the train hit it square.

That was a short impact of a fraction of a second and anyone on the train experienced a tremendous decelerating force for that duration of the impact. Let's say someone who is having a drink on the train would have spilled his drink only. Hopefully, the train remained on the rail.

Not Amazing

There's no miracle here. An empty trailer is very light compared with the cab of the truck. The train hit at least 20-25 feet behind the cab, and hit so fast that the trailer was ripped right off the pivot. The truck's driver probably hardly even felt it - just a quick jostle.
